The BEST 40HVIT is the Visual Indicator Thumb-Turn Kit for the BEST 40H Series mortise lock, designed to give building occupants immediate, unambiguous confirmation that a room has been secured. The thumb-turn uses a color-coded padlock icon: red indicates the door is locked and secured, green indicates the door is unlocked and open to entry. In a lockdown event, there is no guessing, no double-checking, and no wasted seconds.

What the 40H VIT Does and Why It Was Built

The 40HVIT was introduced specifically in response to school and university lockdown policy demand. When a classroom or office needs to be secured from inside during an active threat, the person locking the door needs to know immediately and with certainty that the lock is engaged. The thumb-turn VIT (Visual Indicator Thumb-Turn) delivers that confirmation visually without requiring the person to look through a peephole, crouch down to the keyhole, or turn the handle to verify engagement.

The locked icon is a closed padlock painted red. The unlocked icon is an open padlock. The visual is readable at a glance from several feet away, which matters when someone is moving quickly in a high-stress situation. Faculty, staff, and personnel can lock the door confidently from inside the room without entering the hallway or exposing themselves.

Retrofit Kit: Installs on Existing 40H Locks

The 40HVIT ships as a standalone retrofit kit. It installs on existing BEST 40H mortise locks that are already mounted in the door without removing the lockcase or opening the door prep. The kit includes all parts and fasteners required for one side of the door installation. The design is non-handed, meaning the same kit installed on right-hand and left-hand doors without modification.

Mounting screws are positioned at a further radius from the spindle hole than standard thumb-turns, which reduces binding risk during installation and improves long-term stability in the trim.

Compatible Lock Functions and Trim Styles

The 40HVIT is compatible with BEST 40H mortise locks in the following functions: R, T, AT, AB, TD, C, INL, and IND. It is ideally suited for thumbturn functions including AT, B, T, L, LB, LT, and AD. Compatible trim styles are H (sectional rose), R, and S. The indicator is designed to fit the largest S Rose split trim, which covers the broadest range of existing 40H installations.

The visual indicator can be installed on either the inside or outside of the door, giving specifiers the flexibility to put the status confirmation where it does the most good for the specific application.
