About this item
The Corbin Russwin DL4117 is a Grade 1 extra heavy-duty classroom function mortise deadlock from the DL4100 Series. It's certified to ANSI E6090 and UL listed for use on fire doors. The classroom function is the defining characteristic: the deadbolt is operated by key from outside and by thumbturn from inside, but the thumbturn retracts the bolt only. It cannot project the bolt. That single design decision makes the DL4117 the correct hardware for school classrooms, university buildings, healthcare facilities, and any opening that requires lockdown capability from outside with guaranteed egress from inside.
It's an ASSA ABLOY manufactured product under the Corbin Russwin brand. American Locksets is an authorized Corbin Russwin dealer.
Why the Classroom Function Matters for Lockdown Security
The thumbturn-retracts-only design is intentional and critical. In an active threat situation or building lockdown:
A teacher or staff member exits to the hallway and uses a key to project the deadbolt from outside, securing the room. Students inside can see the thumbturn but turning it only retracts the bolt. They can use it to get out in an emergency, but they cannot use it to lock themselves inside. Faculty with master keys can access the room from outside at any time.
This function satisfies both requirements: occupant life safety (always egress-capable from inside) and perimeter security (lockable from outside by authorized key holders only). It's specified by architects and facility managers under ANSI E6090 in K-12 schools, universities, hospitals, government buildings, and secure office environments.
Deadbolt and Lockcase Construction
The deadbolt is steel with a hardened pin and a 1-inch throw. The hardened pin resists drilling and sawing attacks on the bolt itself. The lockcase is heavy wrought steel with a zinc dichromate finish for corrosion resistance. The front plate is available in brass, bronze, or stainless steel at 4-5/8" x 1-1/8", with a free-floating adjustment for both flat and beveled doors up to 1/8" in 2".
Grade 1 extra heavy-duty classification confirms the DL4117 exceeds the minimum ANSI/BHMA commercial performance requirements for mortise deadlocks.
Physical Specifications
Handing: Non-handed. Installs on any door hand without modification. Door thickness: 1-3/4" (44mm) standard. Available for doors up to 2-1/4" thick. Backset: 2-3/4" (70mm) standard. Optional 2-3/8" (60mm) backset available.
Strike: Wrought brass or bronze, 3-1/2" x 1-1/8" standard. Optional strikes available for specific applications.
Cylinder: 6-pin, L4 keyway, 0-bitted standard (shipped without cut keys to facilitate master key scheduling). Two nickel silver cut keys included on standard keyed configurations. Interchangeable core (IC) prep available for facilities running IC key systems. Additional keyways beyond L4 available.
Keying and Master Key Integration
The DL4117 accepts standard Corbin Russwin keying: master keying, grand master keying, and construction master keying. IC compatibility means the cylinder can be swapped in the field without removing the lockset from the door, which is the preferred approach on large campus installations where lockdowns require immediate rekey capability after a security event.
Certifications
ANSI/BHMA: E6090 Series (Classroom Mortise Deadlock). UL Listed for use on fire doors. Any retrofit to an existing fire-rated opening should be reviewed by the authority having jurisdiction to confirm compliance.
