About this item

Standard exit devices are built for hollow metal and wood doors with wide stiles, typically 4-1/2" or more. Narrow stile aluminum storefronts, full glass doors, and curtain wall assemblies don't have that kind of frame width. A standard device won't mount properly and won't meet code on those openings. The Corbin Russwin ED4200 is purpose-built for exactly those doors. It's a Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device that mounts on doors with as little as 2" of stile width, meets ANSI A156.3 Type 4 Grade 1, and carries UL 305 panic hardware listing, California State Fire Marshal approval, and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code compliance. It's the right device for the applications where everything else doesn't fit.

For the full Corbin Russwin ED4000 Series lineup including standard rim, vertical rod, and mortise configurations, visit the Corbin Russwin ED4000 exit devices category. For all commercial panic hardware across every brand, browse our full exit hardware catalog.

What Narrow Stile Means and Why It Matters

The stile is the vertical framing member on the edge of the door where the exit device mounts. On hollow metal and solid wood commercial doors, that stile is typically wide enough for any standard rim or mortise exit device. On aluminum storefront systems, full glass doors, and narrow profile metal frames, the stile can be as narrow as 1-3/4" to 2". A standard exit device would overhang the stile on both sides, can't be fastened securely, and won't pass inspection on a fire-rated opening. The ED4200 is designed around the narrow stile condition. At 2" minimum stile width, it covers the full range of aluminum storefront, full glass, and narrow metal frame applications where standard devices can't go.

Bar Length and Field Cutting

The standard 36" bar is shipped at full length and field cut to match your door width. For a 32" door, you cut the bar on site to fit. No special tools beyond a hacksaw and the included template. The 48" optional bar covers wider openings in a single device. If your door schedule includes both 36" and 48" openings, order the correct bar length for each. Do not attempt to extend a bar beyond its rated size.

Available Trims for the ED4200

The ED4200 ships exit-only. The outside trim determines the entry function. Compatible ED4000 Series trims include Armstrong, Citation, Lustra, Newport, and Princeton lever styles, all available in passage (810ET), classroom (855ET), and storeroom (859ET) functions. A nightlatch escutcheon pull trim (P1057ET) is available for pull-only outside access without a lever. Electrified motor latch retraction is available on the ED4200 MELR configuration for access control integration. For all compatible outside trims, browse Corbin Russwin exit device trims.
