A rim exit device latches at one point, the top. That's fine for most single doors, but on taller aluminum or glass doors where top and bottom engagement is required by the door manufacturer or local code, a rim device isn't the specification. The Corbin Russwin ED4800 is. It's a Grade 1 narrow stile concealed vertical rod (CVR) panic exit device that latches at both the top and bottom of the door simultaneously when closed, using internal vertical rods concealed inside the door stile. ED4800 vs. ED4200: How CVR Differs from Rim

Both the ED4200 and ED4800 are narrow stile devices for aluminum and metal doors. The difference is the latching method. The ED4200 is a rim device: it latches only at the top, using a rim latch that engages a rim strike on the door frame. The ED4800 is concealed vertical rod: it latches at the top with a 3/4" pullman deadlatch AND at the bottom with a 5/8" deadbolt, both activated by a single push of the touchpad. The bottom rod retracts fully during the door swing so nothing drags on the floor. When the door closes, both points re-engage automatically.

The CVR design is required when the door manufacturer's warranty or the door's fire label requires multi-point latching, or when the opening's security specification calls for top-and-bottom engagement. It's also the preferred specification for taller doors (7' to 8') where a single rim latch provides insufficient holding force against the door's natural tendency to bow or flex.

Pushpad Design and ADA Compliance
