About this item

The Corbin Russwin N9903 is the electrically controlled lever trim for the ED5000 Series exit device, configured for fail safe operation. If you searched "m98.c9" or "corbin russwin ed5000 parts manual"-the M98 is the security monitor switch option that can be added to the N9903 trim assembly. The M98 provides a dedicated SPDT contact that monitors whether the lever is in a locked or unlocked state, rated 4 amps at 250VAC, feeding a real-time signal back to the access control panel. If your project spec requires lever state monitoring alongside fail safe operation, the M98 is the add-on to specify with the N9903 trim.

Fail Safe Explained: What Happens at This Door

Fail safe means the lever is locked when power is applied and unlocks when power is removed. Power on: the outside lever is rigid and won't retract the latch. Power off (power outage, fire alarm trigger, access control signal): the outside lever releases and the door opens freely from outside.

This is the correct specification for doors on required egress paths where life safety codes mandate that the door be passable without a credential during a power failure or fire alarm event. Stairwell re-entry doors, hospital corridor doors, and exit access doors on means of egress are typical N9903 applications. The fire alarm integration releases the lever immediately on alarm activation-no delay, no credential required.

The fail secure version of this trim is the N9905. Fail secure is locked when power is off and unlocked when power is on. It's the correct choice for secure areas where a power failure should not unlock the door. Never substitute one for the other without confirming the code requirement for that specific opening.

EcoFlex Power Technology

The N9903 features Corbin Russwin's EcoFlex technology. EcoFlex manages solenoid current-full inrush current only at the moment of state change, then drops to a continuous holding current significantly lower than the initial draw. Actuator draw is 400mA inrush and 15mA continuous at both 12VDC and 24VDC. This dramatically reduces heat generation in the solenoid, extends component life, and allows more trim units to run on a single access control power supply than conventional electrically controlled trim allows.

Voltage, Wiring, and Installation

The N9903 operates from 12 to 24VDC. The internal rectifier accepts AC or DC input, so you can connect to either voltage type without additional conversion hardware. A plug connector with a 4-foot wire lead is included. Wiring can route through the exit device body as the raceway, eliminating the need for a separate wire conduit across the door edge. A02 mortise cylinder cam is required when specifying cylinder with this trim. The M99 trim gasket for exterior applications is included with the unit.

Free Wheeling Lever

When the N9903 lever is in the locked (power-on) state, the outside lever free wheels. It turns freely without transmitting any force to the latch mechanism. This protects the internal components from torque damage when someone tries to force the lever while locked-the lever just spins. The escutcheon is 13/16-inch beveled, flush cylinder configuration, providing a clean architectural profile that deters prying and gripping attacks.

N9903 vs A9903

The letter prefix identifies the lever design. N designates one specific lever style within the 900 Series trim family for the ED5000. A designates another. The function (fail safe), electrical specs, EcoFlex technology, and wiring are identical between them. Specify based on project architectural lever requirements.
