Dormakaba EP-MU-COM-001, M-Unit Kit for E-Plex Locks Programming

The dormakaba EP-MU-COM-001 is the M-Unit (Maintenance Unit) Kit that enables PC-based programming of dormakaba E-Plex standalone electronic locks via infrared data transfer. It's the hardware interface required when using a laptop or netbook as the lock communication device with E-Plex Standard or Enterprise software. The kit creates the infrared bridge between the software running on your PC and the infrared sensor window built into every E-Plex lock.

Without the EP-MU-COM-001, you can't use a standard laptop or netbook to program E-Plex locks. E-Plex locks don't have external USB ports — they receive programming data through their built-in infrared sensor. The M-Unit kit provides the IrDA adapter that converts your PC's USB port into the infrared signal the lock reads.

What the M-Unit Kit Includes

The EP-MU-COM-001 ships with four components:

IrDA to USB adapter: A plug-and-play infrared-to-USB converter (ActiSys) that connects to any USB port on a laptop or netbook. Once connected, it creates the infrared beam used to transmit data to the lock's sensor.

USB Extension Cable: Allows you to position the IrDA adapter at the correct distance from the lock's sensor window during programming. Standard USB cables alone don't give enough reach to hold the adapter close to the lock face while keeping the laptop at a comfortable distance.

USB Flash Drive: Pre-loaded with PC M-Unit software, an electronic copy of the User Manual, and a Getting Started Guide.

Compatible E-Plex Locks and Software

The EP-MU-COM-001 M-Unit works with the full dormakaba E-Plex lock family, including:

E-Plex 1500 (E1500), E-Plex 2000 (E2000), E-Plex 3000 (E3000), PowerPlex 2000 (P2000), and E-Plex 5000 (E5000) Series — including E3200/E3700 narrow stile configurations and E5200/E5700 cylindrical and mortise variants.

The M-Unit requires E-Plex Standard or Enterprise software to be installed on the PC. Software is sold separately:

EP-STD-03-001 (E-Plex Standard): Microsoft Excel-based access control software that manages up to 300 users per door and up to 10,000 doors per site. Standard software is also available as a free download from dormakaba's software portal.

EP-EPRISE-03-001 (E-Plex Enterprise): SQL server-based software for multi-PC networked installations. Manages up to 30,000 audit events per lock, unlimited users in database, multiple access schedules, and Crystal Reports-based reporting.

The EP-MU-COM-001 is the hardware-only kit for installations where the software is already deployed and a second M-Unit is needed for an additional technician or programming PC.

How Infrared Programming Works

Plug the IrDA adapter into the laptop's USB port. Open E-Plex Standard or Enterprise software on the laptop. Configure user access codes, door settings, schedules, and permissions in the software. Walk to the lock. Hold the USB extension cable with the IrDA adapter pointed at the lock's sensor window. The software transmits the configuration data via infrared beam directly to the lock in seconds. LED indicators on the lock confirm successful data transfer.

Audit trail download works the same way in reverse: the software retrieves the event history stored in the lock's memory (up to 9,000 events on E3000/E5000 Series, up to 1,000 on E1500/E2000 Series) and records them in the PC database for reporting.
