About this item
The Dormakaba QCL140 is the Grade 1 version of the privacy cylindrical lock. Same ANSI F76 function as the Grade 2 C540: push button inside locks the outside lever, turning the inside lever releases it, the button releases automatically when the door closes. The difference from Grade 2 is where the QCL140 earns its specification on commercial doors rather than residential or light-duty applications.
Grade 1 means 800,000 cycles tested to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 specifications. The clutch mechanism is the critical commercial feature: when the outside lever is locked by the push button, the clutch disengages the outside lever from the latch mechanism. Someone applying force to the outside lever can't transmit that force to internal components. The lever moves freely with no mechanical connection to the latch when locked, which means vandalism attempts that would strip the mechanism of a standard lever lock result in a freely spinning lever and an intact lock body. Thru-bolt design and heavy-duty spring tension prevent lever sag over years of daily use. For all Grade 1 commercial lever locks, browse our commercial locks catalog.
ANSI F76 Privacy Function: All Four Operating States
State one (button out): Both levers operate the latch freely. Normal passage from either side.
State two (button in, standard press): Outside lever locks. Inside lever remains free for egress. Turning the inside lever releases the button and the outside lever returns to free operation.
State three (door closes): When the door closes, the button releases automatically. The outside lever returns to free operation without any manual reset from inside.
State four (emergency outside release): A standard screwdriver, coin, or thin tool inserted into the outside emergency slot and turned releases the button for emergency entry.

QCL140 vs. C540: Grade 1 vs. Grade 2 Privacy
Both the QCL140 and C540 are ANSI F76 privacy locks. The C540 is Grade 2, rated to 400,000 cycles, and appropriate for residential and light commercial applications. The QCL140 is Grade 1, rated to 800,000 cycles, includes the clutch vandal-resistance mechanism, carries Miami-DADE hurricane compliance, and is backed by a lifetime mechanical warranty. For commercial restrooms, hotel rooms, healthcare patient rooms, and any privacy application in a high-traffic or abuse-prone environment, the QCL140 is the correct specification.
