About this item

The Dormakaba Simplex EE1011/EE1011 is the back-to-back mechanical pushbutton cipher lock in the Simplex EE1000 Series, with combination entry required from both sides of the door. Each side accepts its own independent combination code, so the inside and outside codes can be different. Fully mechanical, no batteries, no wiring, no network connection. Heavy-duty cylindrical lock housing with cast front housing, vandal-resistant solid metal pushbuttons, and water-resistant construction. 3-hour UL and ULC fire rated on A-label doors.

What Is the Dormakaba Simplex EE1011/EE1011 Cypher Lock

Simplex (now owned by Dormakaba after the 2015 Kaba-Dorma merger, and previously distributed under the Ilco, Kaba Access, and Simplex Access Controls brand names) invented the mechanical pushbutton lock category in the 1960s for government and military applications. The EE1011/EE1011 is the dual-combination variant in the EE1000 Series, distinguished by the "EE" prefix (indicating exterior-to-exterior, or push button access required from both sides). The matching "EE1011/EE1011" SKU tells you it's the combination-only function on both sides (no key override on either side). Standard deployments include SCIFs, secure research labs, data center vestibules, armory doors, pharmacy dispensaries, evidence rooms, secure vaults, corporate IT rooms, and any opening where you need to verify identity in both directions, not just for entry.

Why It's Called a Cypher Lock (And What That Means)

"Cypher lock" is the legacy military and government term for mechanical pushbutton combination locks, dating back to Simplex's original 1960s SCIF and vault applications. The Department of Defense, GSA-controlled spaces, classified research facilities, and federal law enforcement still use the term in specifications today. If you're reading a Division 08 71 00 door hardware spec from a federal contracting agency or military installation and it calls for a "cypher lock" in a double-sided configuration, the EE1011/EE1011 or one of its EE1021 siblings is almost always what the spec writer had in mind. The term is used interchangeably with "combination push button lock", "mechanical combo lock", and "push button access control" in the commercial security market.

How the Double-Sided Mechanism Works

Every standard commercial door lock is locked on one side (usually the outside) and free on the other (inside, for egress). The EE1011/EE1011 breaks that convention. Both sides have a 5-button mechanical keypad, and both sides require a valid combination to retract the latchbolt. Enter the combination from outside to get in, exit requires entering the inside combination to get out. Each side's combination is independent, which means you can give the outside code to a wider group (employees, contractors) and restrict the inside code to a smaller group (security personnel only) for controlled egress scenarios. This is the defining feature that separates an EE-series cypher lock from a standard single-sided Simplex 1000 or L1000 lever lock. There's no key override on this specific function, which is intentional for maximum-security openings where a lost key becomes a spec compliance issue. If you need key override on one or both sides, step up to the EE1021/EE1011 or EE1021/EE1021 variants described below.

EE1000 Family Variants (EE1011, EE1021, EE1021C, EE1021M)

The EE1000 Series covers several function configurations in the same double-sided form factor. EE1011/EE1011 (this product) is a combination of both sides, no key override. EE1021/EE1011 adds key override on entry only. EE1021/EE1021 adds key override on both entry and egress. The letter suffix on EE1021 variants indicates which cylinder format: EE1021B accepts a Best 6-pin cylinder, EE1021C accepts a Corbin Russwin cylinder, EE1021M accepts a Medeco high-security cylinder. All use the same lock chassis and install identically, so spec matching is about picking the right key override configuration for your keying program. Color options go beyond 26D: the EE1011/EE1011 is also stocked in 05 Antique Brass and 03 Bright Brass finishes in addition to this Satin Chrome variant.
