Falcon 510L Electrified Trim: How Electric Lever Trim on an Exit Device Works

The 510L Electrified mounts as the outside lever trim on a Falcon 25 Series exit device. The inside panic touchbar always provides free mechanical egress at all times regardless of power or the electric state of the outside lever. The outside lever is controlled by the electric solenoid. When the access control system sends the correct signal, the outside lever engages and allows entry by key or by electric release.

The solenoid is rated for continuous duty at 24VDC, drawing 0.4 amps. The internal rectifier eliminates the need for a DC-only power supply and allows the trim to accept an AC power source if that is what the access control system provides.

The freewheeling lever means that when the outside lever is in the locked/electrically-off state, it rotates freely without transmitting force to the latch mechanism. Forced rotation of the lever under a locked state produces no mechanical output and no damage to the trim or exit device.

Fail Safe vs. Fail Secure: FSA vs. FSE

The 510L Electrified is available in two fail modes that must be specified at order:

FSA (Fail Safe): Power failure or interruption unlocks the outside lever, allowing free entry without a credential. This is the correct configuration for fire egress doors, stairwells, and any opening governed by NFPA 101 or IBC requirements where free egress must be maintained on power loss. Installed on doors in hospitals, fire exits, and any opening where life safety codes require unlocked passage when power is removed.

FSE (Fail Secure): Power failure locks the outside lever. The lever is locked when power is off and unlocked when power is on. This is the correct configuration for server rooms, secured corridors, and controlled entry points where a power failure must not create an unsecured opening.

Confirm the fail mode requirement with the access control system integrator and the authority having jurisdiction before specifying.
