The MA881 operates on the EU (electrically unlocked) function. The latchbolt is operated by lever from inside at all times. The outside lever is locked and does not retract the latchbolt except when electrically unlocked by a signal from an access control panel, keypad, card reader, or biometric credential. When power is applied, both inside and outside levers retract the latch freely. When power is off, the outside lever stays locked and a key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt for mechanical override. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress regardless of power state, which satisfies life safety and ADA egress requirements on any commercial opening.

Voltage is user-selectable at 12V DC or 24V DC. Specify voltage at time of order. The RX version (MA881RX) adds a request to exit switch that signals the access control panel when the inside lever is operated, for valid exit logging and door alarm suppression.

MA881 vs. MA851: Fail Secure vs. Fail Safe

The MA881 fail secure configuration is the correct choice for perimeter entries, server rooms, pharmaceutical storage, cashier stations, and any opening where power loss must not allow unauthorized entry.

The Falcon MA851 is the fail safe counterpart for the same MA Series lock body. On the MA851, power on holds the lock locked and power off releases it, which is the appropriate specification for stair tower exit doors integrated with fire alarm systems. If you are specifying an access-controlled door and are unsure which fail mode applies to your opening, confirm with your access control contractor or code authority before ordering.

Construction and Mechanical Specifications

The MA Series lock case is cold-formed steel, zinc dichromate plated, 0.090 inch thick. Optional lead wrapping is available for rated radiation shielding applications in healthcare and nuclear facilities. Hubs are hardened steel. The spindle is designed to break away at a maximum of 480 in./lbs. to prevent damage to the lock chassis under forced rotation.

The MA881 is available in three cylinder configurations: L (less conventional cylinder), B (Small Format IC Core, less core), and standard cylinder options. Cylinder is ordered separately for the L and B configurations.
