What Is an IC Housing and Why It's Separate from the IC Core
In a Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) system, the core (which contains the keyway plug, pins, and springs) is separate from the housing (which provides the interface between the core and the lock mechanism). The housing installs permanently in the lock or device. The core drops in and out using the control key for rapid rekeying. This separation allows the same core type to work across many different lock applications -- the housing adapts the standard SFIC core format to each specific lock's mechanical requirements. When ordering SFIC components, you need both the housing (permanent, lock-specific) and the core (interchangeable, masterkey-specific). See the IC cores overview for complete SFIC format guidance. IC Housing Types by Application
Mortise housings: Install in mortise lock cylinder preps. Available in Schlage L Series, Sargent 7300, Corbin Russwin ML2000, and BEST 45H compatible formats. Brand-specific -- confirm the lock model before ordering.
Cylindrical housings: Install in cylindrical lock cylinder preps. Compatible with the respective lock brand's cylindrical prep dimensions.
Rim housings: Surface-mount format for rim lock and Adams Rite storefront applications. BEST SFIC rim housings are used on Adams Rite MS1890 Series hardware for SFIC core integration on storefront doors.
Padlock housings: Create high-security removable core padlocks when combined with an SFIC core -- the padlock is rekeyed by core replacement without a locksmith.
BEST SFIC vs. Schlage SFIC Housings: Not Interchangeable
BEST SFIC and Schlage SFIC housings share the same external core dimensions but the internal locking lug geometry differs. A BEST SFIC core won't seat correctly in a Schlage SFIC housing and vice versa. Order the housing that matches your program format. Mixing formats within a facility creates operational problems that can lock out personnel when the wrong control key is used on the wrong housing.

Do I need to order the IC housing and the IC core separately?
Yes. The housing and the core are separate components ordered separately. The housing installs permanently in the lock. The core is part of the masterkey program and is ordered through the IC program administrator's authorized distributor. Can I use BEST SFIC cores in a dormakaba lock body after the 2017 acquisition?
Yes. dormakaba manufactures lock bodies (C100 lever locks, M1000 mortise locks) with BEST SFIC prep as a standard option. Legacy BEST-branded SFIC cores and current dormakaba-branded BEST SFIC cores both operate in dormakaba SFIC-prepped lock bodies using the same control key and the same masterkey program structure.
