About this item
The Imperial Taco ED-FVR531 is the fire-rated version of the VR531 Series surface vertical rod panic exit device. Pushing the crossbar retracts both the top latch and the bottom latch simultaneously via the vertical surface rod, releasing the door for egress. When the door closes, both latches re-engage. UL10C positive pressure fire rated. ANSI A156.3 Grade 1. ADA compliant. Non-handed and reversible.
The "F" in ED-FVR531 stands for fire-rated. This matters for specification and installation compliance. The non-fire-rated version (ED-VR531) can be ordered with dogging capability, which allows the crossbar to be held depressed so the door operates as a push-pull door without the panic latches engaging. The fire-rated ED-FVR531 does not have dogging. Fire-rated door assemblies under NFPA 80, IBC, and California Building Code requirements must remain in the latched position when closed. A fire door cannot be held open or held in an unlatched state by hardware dogging. If the panic device on a fire door is dogged open, the fire door assembly fails to meet code. Specify the ED-FVR531 for fire-rated openings. For all commercial exit hardware, browse our exit hardware catalog.
California Rated Panic Hardware: What UL10C Means
California Building Code and most state building codes require fire-rated panic hardware on fire-rated egress door assemblies. The fire rating requirement specifically involves how the hardware performs under positive pressure: during a fire, the pressure differential between a burning corridor and an adjacent room can force doors open. UL10C is the fire test standard that evaluates door assemblies under that positive pressure condition. The ED-FVR531 with UL10C fire rating meets this California-rated panic hardware requirement for fire-rated egress doors in commercial buildings.

FVR531 vs VR531: Fire Rated vs Standard
The non-fire-rated ED-VR531 and the fire-rated ED-FVR531 use the same vertical rod mechanism and crossbar profile. The installation footprint is the same. The key functional difference is UL10C fire certification on the FVR531 and the absence of dogging capability. On a fire-rated door schedule, the fire-rated version is required by code. On a non-fire-rated door where the dogging function is needed for high-traffic push-through periods, the ED-VR531 is the appropriate specification.
Panic Hardware vs Panic Bars: The Right Terminology
"Panic bars," "crash bars," "push bars," and "exit devices" all refer to the same product category: push-to-exit hardware that allows door release by pushing a bar or crossbar. ANSI uses an "exit device." Building codes and the fire authority use "panic hardware" for fire-rated applications. All these terms describe the ED-FVR531. Whether your spec says "California rated panic bars" or "fire-rated exit device with vertical rod," the ED-FVR531 is the specification.
