About this item
The LCN 3131 is the Size 1 configuration of the LCN 3130 Series concealed overhead door closer - a closure whose entire cylinder and arm assembly installs inside the top rail of the door itself, with only the concealed track running in the frame head visible from above. Nothing is visible on either the door face or the frame face. This is the specification used when architectural requirements prohibit any visible door hardware, in high-design interiors where surface-mounted closers are objectionable, and on installations where protecting the closer body from vandalism or abuse is a priority.
This is distinct from the LCN 2030 Series, which conceals the closer body inside the frame rather than the door. The 3130 mounts in the door. The 2030 mounts in the frame. Both provide complete concealment but require different door and frame preparation.
Why Size 1 Is the ADA Specification
The LCN 3131 is specifically designated as the ADA model because Size 1 carries the lightest spring in the 3130 Series. The ADA Standards and ANSI A117.1 require that interior doors on accessible routes not exceed 5 pounds of opening force. At its minimum spring setting, the Size 1 achieves under 5 pounds of opening force on a 36-inch door, which no Size 2 or Size 3 in this series can reliably match. If the project requires ADA-compliant opening force on a door with concealed hardware, the 3131 is the correct selection.
3131 vs 3132 vs 3133: Selecting the Right Size
The 3130 Series cylinder size is selected based on door width. The 3131 (Size 1) is for interior doors in the narrower range, up to approximately 26 to 28 inches wide. The 3132 (Size 2) covers medium-width interior doors. The 3133 (Size 3) handles wider interior doors in the 34 to 38-inch range. Sizing is fixed at the factory - this is the single most important technical note for anyone ordering this closer. Unlike surface-mounted closers where spring tension is adjusted with a valve after installation, the spring strength in the 3130 Series is not field-adjustable. If the door requires more or less closing power than a specific size provides, a different size must be ordered.
The LCN 3131 Template and Installation Requirements
People searching for the "LCN 3131 template" are looking for the door preparation cutting guide. The full-scale installation template is included in the standard package shipped with every 3131. The template is printed on the reverse side of the LCN 3130 Series installation instructions and provides all mortise dimensions for routing the door top rail and frame head. The template shows a left-hand installation - right-hand is the mirror image. The door top rail must be a minimum of 4 inches wide to accept the closer body. Minimum door width is 2 feet 2 inches. The closer body is pre-regulated at the factory before shipment.
Handing: This Must Be Specified at Time of Order
The 3131 is a handed closer - the mounting plate is permanently marked "R" for right-hand or "L" for left-hand. Determine door handing before ordering and select the correct handling at checkout. A right-hand door is one that swings away from you when hinges are on the right side. Ordering the wrong hand requires returning the unit - field conversion is not possible.
Certifications, Warranty, and Compliance
The LCN 3131 is ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1 certified. UL and cUL are listed for self-closing doors without hold-open - this means it is fire door compliant as a self-closing device but does not include a hold-open function in its standard configuration. UL 10C listed for positive pressure fire door applications. Meets the Buy American Act for government and federally funded projects. Tested 100-hour salt spray for corrosion resistance. LCN backs the 3130 Series with a 15-year limited warranty.
Two finishes available: Aluminum (BHMA 689) and Dark Bronze (BHMA 695). Standard package includes the cast iron cylinder assembly with mounting plate, standard arm, track roller, standard track, and self-reaming and tapping screws.
