ANSI F13 Dormitory Function Explained
F13 is the ANSI dormitory/entrance function and it is engineered for one specific real-world scenario: a resident inside an apartment, dorm room, or similar housing unit needs to exit fast, in one motion, without fumbling for a deadbolt thumbturn while panicked. Here is how it works. Latchbolt operates by lever from either side. Outside key extends or retracts the deadbolt. Inside thumbturn extends or retracts the deadbolt. Inside lever simultaneously retracts both the latchbolt and the deadbolt in a single motion (the egress feature). Auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt against credit-card attacks. This is the function code that fire marshals, building inspectors, and university housing officials require on dormitory and apartment unit doors because it lets a resident escape during a fire even if the deadbolt is engaged. Specify F13 on student housing, apartment unit doors, assisted living units, behavioral health residential rooms, halfway houses, military barracks, hotel back-of-house staff dorms, and any commercial opening with overnight occupancy.
