About this item
The Schlage 80-116, also referenced as the Schlage 80/116, is a small format interchangeable core rim housing built for exit devices, aluminum doors, and commercial openings running a Schlage SFIC key management program. It ships with a disposable construction core already installed, so the opening is secured from day one without needing a permanent SFIC core during construction. When you're ready to go live with your keying system, a control key removes the construction core and your ordered SFIC core drops straight in. No tools, no disassembly.
This is the rim housing only. The permanent Schlage SFIC core is ordered separately based on your facility's keyway, pinning, and master key requirements.
What Is an SFIC Rim Housing?
SFIC stands for Small Format Interchangeable Core. The system separates the keyway and pinning (the core) from the mounting hardware (the housing). That separation means rekeying happens at the core levela locksmith or facilities manager with a control key can change cores across an entire building in a fraction of the time a conventional rekey takes, without touching the lock body or door hardware.
The 80-116 is the rim cylinder version. Rim cylinders mount on the surface of a door and drive the latch via a tailpiece. They're the standard cylinder type for Von Duprin exit devices, Monarch devices, Adams Rite applications on aluminum storefront doors, and most commercial panic hardware that connects via tailpiece rather than a mortise cam.
SFIC vs. FSIC: Which Format Does Your Building Use?
Schlage makes two interchangeable core formats and they're not cross-compatible. SFIC (Small Format) and FSIC (Full Size) use different keyways, different key blanks, and different housing dimensions. You can't install an SFIC core in an FSIC housing. Before ordering, confirm which format your master key program runs. The easiest check: SFIC cores have two face holes that align vertically, while FSIC cores show an offset figure-8 pattern. Schlage SFIC and Best IC cores also share the same physical format, which matters for mixed-brand facilities specifying keyways across both systems.
Disposable Construction Core vs. Keyed Construction Core
The 80-116 ships with a disposable construction corea one-time-use plastic core that secures the opening during construction, then gets discarded when permanent cores arrive. It can't be rekeyed or recovered. If your project needs a returnable, keyed construction core that can be collected and reused on future jobs, the Schlage 80-159 is the alternative. Both housings are otherwise identical in mounting and tailpiece configuration.
Tailpiece Orientation and Compatibility
The tailpiece ships horizontal from the factory, which is correct for Von Duprin exit devices, Monarch hardware, and the majority of commercial rim lock applications. Orientation can be changed in the field if your device requires vertical alignment. The housing includes a collar, mounting screws, and backplate so it installs without additional hardware on standard door preps.
