About this item
The Schlage A40S LEV is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock from Schlage's A Series with the Levon lever. If you've been searching "lev locks" or "lev-605" for this lock in a specific finish- LEV is the Schlage designation for the Levon lever trim style. The A40S is the privacy function in the A Series, and the number after it in a full model code specifies finish: 605 is Bright Brass, 606 is Satin Brass, 612 is Satin Bronze, 613 is Oil Rubbed Bronze, 622 is Matte Black, 625 is Bright Chrome, and 626 is Satin Chrome.
A40S Privacy Function: How It Works
The A40S is ANSI function F76- privacy. Inside, a push button in the lever or on the rose locks the outside lever. Once the button is pushed in, the outside lever won't turn. From inside, the lever always retracts the latch freely- the person inside can exit at any time. To unlock the outside from the inside, turn the inside lever, which releases the button, or simply close and reopen the door which also releases it.
From outside, there's an emergency override. A small screwdriver or the emergency pin tool inserted into the pinhole on the outside rose releases the privacy button without a key. That's the intended access method for restrooms, changing rooms, and privacy applications where someone inside may need assistance- hotel staff, facility managers, or caregivers can open the door without destroying the lock.
The S in A40S: Lever vs Knob
The S suffix on the A Series function code identifies lever trim- as opposed to models without the S, which use knob trim. The A40S is the privacy function with lever trim. The A40 without the S is the same privacy function with knob trim. Both use the same A Series cylindrical chassis underneath.
Levon Lever: Design and ADA Compliance
The Levon lever is a clean, contemporary commercial lever silhouette- straight at the grip with a slight downturn at the end. It returns to within 1/2 inch of the door face, which means it meets the California State Reference Code (formerly Title 19) lever clearance requirement and is consistent with ADA accessible design intent for lever hardware. The lever is pressure cast zinc, plated to match the finish ordered.
A Series Build Quality
The A Series is Schlage's original cylindrical lock platform. The chassis is steel with zinc dichromate plating for corrosion resistance. Cold-rolled steel hubs are machined and threaded to prevent the lockset from loosening over time. The heavy-duty cast mounting plate uses specially tapped holes to keep the lockset tight against the door face even under heavy daily use.
One of the A Series' most practical installation features is the patented door range adjuster. Most cylindrical locks require separate trim components for different door thicknesses. The A Series door range adjuster handles doors from 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch thickness without swapping parts- it adjusts on site.
