About this item
The Schlage A Series has been in continuous production since 1925. That's not a marketing point, it's the reason the A80 is still specified on storage rooms, utility closets, janitor rooms, small office spaces, and light-to-medium commercial applications across North America: a century of consistent door prep compatibility means replacement and keying into existing Schlage master key systems is straightforward regardless of when the building was built. The A80 Orbit is the storeroom function in the A Series: outside knob always fixed, key entry only from outside, inside knob always free for immediate egress without a key. The Orbit (ORB) knob gives it a traditional round profile suited for both commercial and heavy-duty residential installations.
Grade 2 certification to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 covers light to medium commercial applications. UL Listed for all functions up to 3-hour fire ratings. ANSI F86 Storeroom Function: How It Works
The outside knob is rigid at all times. Turning it from outside produces no latch retraction. The only way to enter from outside is to insert a key in the outside cylinder and turn. Key operation retracts the latch for entry. The inside knob is always free: turn it and the latch retracts immediately for egress without a key, without unlocking anything, without any restriction. This is the function required for rooms that need to stay locked from outside at all times, but always provide free egress for anyone inside.
The storeroom function is the most secure standard cylindrical lock function for non-electrified openings. Unlike an entrance lock where someone can unlock the outside knob with a push button toggle, the storeroom outside knob has no toggle and no free state. It's permanently rigid. Key is the only override from outside.

The E keyway is available for applications requiring key section separation from C-keyway systems. Two restricted keyway options are available for higher security key control: Everest C123 and Everest C145, both Schlage's patented restricted keyways that prevent unauthorized key duplication. Keying configurations include keyed different (standard), keyed alike, master keyed, construction keying, and interchangeable core (IC).
A80 ORB vs. A80PD: Knob Style Difference
The Schlage A80 Orbit (ORB) and the A80PD share the same storeroom function and all mechanical specifications. The difference is the knob design: the Orbit has a traditional round sphere profile, while the PD designation uses a different knob style. Function, grade, door prep, and keying are identical. Choose based on the aesthetic that matches adjacent hardware on the door or door schedule.
