What the Classroom Function (L463) Actually Does

The L463 classroom function is different from a standard single cylinder deadbolt in one important way. A key in the outside cylinder throws and retracts the deadbolt normally. The inside thumbturn, however, can only retract the deadbolt - it cannot throw or extend it. You can't lock the deadbolt from inside using the thumbturn.

That sounds counterintuitive until you understand the application. In a school classroom, staff need to be able to deadlock the door from the corridor during a lockdown without entering the room. The key handles the locking. People inside can always get out - the thumbturn releases them. But they can't accidentally or intentionally create a barricade situation by locking the deadbolt from inside. The function balances lockdown capability for staff with egress safety for occupants and code compliance.

The T Designation: Full Size Construction Core

The T in L463T tells you the cylinder format. This lock ships with a full size construction core - a temporary core used during the construction phase before permanent FSIC (Full Size Interchangeable Core) cores are installed. At project handover, the construction core is removed with a control key and the permanent cores for the building's master key program drop in without any lock disassembly.

This is different from other L463 cylinder variants. The P designation means a conventional cylinder installed and keyed. The J designation means FSIC prep with less core. The L designation means no cylinder at all. If your project uses a full size interchangeable core system, the T is the right starting point because it secures the opening during construction and leaves the lock ready for your permanent cores.

L400 Series Small Case vs L9000 Series

The L400 series is Schlage's small case mortise deadbolt line. It's designed for doors where you need a deadbolt only, with no latch - restrooms, utility closets, small interior access points, and doors where a full mortise lock body would be over-specified or physically won't fit. The small case uses a smaller door prep than a standard L9000 series lock. If you're specifying a classroom deadbolt on a door that already has a cylindrical latchset, the L463 adds the deadbolt layer without replacing the latch hardware. If you need a full mortise lock with both deadbolt and latch in a single body, you'd be looking at the L9463 in the L9000 series instead.

XB11-720: The Thumbturn and Cover Plate

The XB11-720 trim package is a B100 series style thumbturn with a cover plate that fits over the deadbolt opening on the inside of the door. It gives the inside of the door a finished, architectural appearance instead of a bare mechanism. The 720 designation specifies the configuration within that trim family. For projects where the interior side of the door needs to match the design intent of the rest of the hardware schedule, the XB11-720 is the standard specified trim combination for L400 series classroom deadbolts.
