ANSI F04 Office/Entry Function: What Happens at the Door

ANSI F04 is the office and inner entry function. Both levers freely retract the latchbolt when the outside lever is in the unlocked position. To lock the outside, the person inside turns the thumbturn. With the thumbturn turned, the outside lever is inoperative-the latch does not retract from outside. A key from outside still retracts the latch even when the thumbturn is engaged, which allows authorized entry without forcing the inside person to unlock the door. The outside lever stays locked until the inside person returns the thumbturn to vertical, or until a key is used to unlock it from outside. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress regardless of thumbturn position.

This is the correct function for private offices where staff want to work undisturbed, for therapy and consultation rooms, and for any space where the occupant controls outside access but authorized personnel need key-entry capability.

Field Reversible Without Disassembly

The L9000 Series is field reversible-handing can be changed at the door without disassembling the lock case. When a door swing changes during construction or renovation, the installer flips the handing at the door without pulling the lock apart and repacking it. This is a significant advantage on commercial projects where last-minute door schedule changes are common. Most competing mortise locks require at least partial disassembly to reverse handing. Schlage's L Series does not.

L9050 vs Other L9000 Functions

The L9050 is one function within a large L9000 platform. L9040 is passage-both levers always free, no locking. L9060 is storeroom-outside lever always locked, key entry only. L9070 is classroom-key from outside locks and unlocks outside lever. L9080 is storeroom/closet with thumbturn inside. L9096 is a privacy function with indicator. If your project calls for an office function specifically-inside thumbturn controls outside lever lockout, key override from outside-the L9050 is the correct specification.

The 06 Lever and Model Suffix Options

The 06 designates the lever design within Schlage's L Series trim catalog-a standard straight commercial lever with a milled tactile warning, commonly specified across institutional and commercial projects. The A rose is 2-1/8 inches in diameter, wrought brass or stainless steel.
