About this item
The Schlage L9080 is the storeroom function mortise lock from the L9000 Series, specified with the 17 lever design. If you searched "l9080", "schlage l9080", "l9080 mortise lock", "l9080 schlage", "l9080 lockset", or "storeroom lock schlage"-the L9080 is ANSI Function F07, which is the storeroom/closet function. The defining characteristic of F07 is that the outside lever is always inoperative. No button, no switch, no thumbturn changes that. From outside, the only way to retract the latch is a key-every time, without exception.
ANSI F07 Storeroom: Outside Lever Always Inoperative
ANSI F07 is the most restrictive of the standard mortise functions. The outside lever is mechanically disconnected from the latch at all times. It turns freely but never retracts the latch. Key from outside is the only way to enter. From inside, the lever is always free for immediate egress-no key, no credential, no thumbturn required to exit. The auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt automatically when the door closes, preventing shimming or credit card attacks on the latch.
This is a harder restriction than the L9050's office function, where a thumbturn controls outside lever lockout. On the L9080, there's nothing to toggle-the outside lever is always rigid regardless of how the lock is programmed or operated. This is why storeroom function is specified for pharmaceutical supply rooms, server rooms, electrical closets, chemical storage, armories, and any space where key-controlled entry is a non-negotiable requirement at every access event.
The 17 Lever Design
The 17 designates the lever style within Schlage's L Series trim catalog. Lever 17 is a straight lever with a milled tactile warning on the lever bow. It's one of Schlage's most widely specified commercial lever designs-clean profile, ADA compliant, coordinates with Schlage D Series cylindrical hardware for suite-matching across a building. All Schlage L Series levers comply with ADA requirements for one-hand operable hardware without tight grasping, pinching, or wrist twisting.
L9080 vs Other L9000 Storeroom and Entry Functions
The L9080 sits in a group of related functions that are easy to confuse. The L9050 (F04) is office/entry-inside thumbturn controls outside lever lockout, key override from outside. The L9060 (F05) is entrance-push button inside locks outside lever, inside lever releases the button. The L9070 (F04-like classroom variant) uses key to lock and unlock outside lever. The L9080 (F07) takes outside lever control completely away-outside lever never operates. If your spec requires key-only entry with zero way to leave the outside lever operable, L9080 is the correct function.
Field Reversible Without Disassembly
Every L9000 Series lock body ships right hand and reverses to left hand in the field without disassembly. The installer changes handing at the door in minutes. On commercial projects where door hand assignments shift during construction, this prevents the costly process of returning and reordering locks.
