About this item
The Schlage L9082-01 is a Grade 1 institution mortise lock from the L9000 series. If you've been searching "l9082", "schlage l9082", "schlage mortise lock", or "schlage mortise locks" - the L9082 is ANSI function F30, the institution or asylum lock: both levers on both sides of the door are always inoperative. The latchbolt is retracted by key only, from either side. No lever on either side of the door will move the latch. The 01 designates the lever style - the straight lever design in the L Series trim lineup.
ANSI F30 Institution Function: Why Both Levers Are Fixed
The institution function is specified for psychiatric facilities, behavioral health units, correctional facilities, detention areas, and other settings where door operation must be controlled entirely by staff at all times. In a standard storeroom lock (L9080), the inside lever is always free - anyone inside can exit. In a standard classroom lock (L9070), the inside lever can be left free or locked by key from outside. The L9082 is different from both. Neither lever operates the latch from either side. Only a key retracts the latch - outside or inside. There's no internal lever-operated exit.
This is the lock specified when full bilateral key control is required, where a person inside the room cannot open the door without staff key access. It's a life-safety and operational security specification that must be coordinated with local AHJ requirements and occupancy codes before installation.
The auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt the moment the door closes - the door is immediately secured from both sides when it shuts.
L9082 vs L9080: The Institution vs Storeroom Distinction
Both are L9000 series mortise locks and both use key entry. The storeroom (L9080, ANSI F07) keeps the outside lever locked but leaves the inside lever always free for egress. The institution lock (L9082, ANSI F30) locks both levers - inside and outside - and requires a key from both directions. If your application is a standard utility room, server room, or storage space, the L9080 is the correct function. If your application requires full bilateral key control with no lever egress, the L9082 is the specification.
The 01 Lever and Field Reversible Handing
The 01 is the lever design designation in Schlage's L Series. It's a straight-style lever with milled tactile warning capability, suitable for institutional environments. The L9082-01 ships with a single lever style on both sides. The L9000 series lockbody is field reversible without disassembly - handing is adjusted at installation, no hand specification required at order. For thicker doors, specify door thickness at order as the standard is 1-3/4 inch but optional ranges extend from 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inches.
Cylinder Options
The standard L9082-01 ships with a conventional 6-pin Schlage cylinder. LFIC (Large Format Interchangeable Core) prep is available with the J suffix (L9082J). SFIC (Small Format Interchangeable Core) prep is also available. Less cylinder configurations are available for facilities specifying their own core program. The L9082 is compatible with Schlage Primus and Everest high-security key systems.
