The Schlage L9090EL is an electric mortise lock from the Schlage L9000 Series. It has no mechanical cylinder on the outside and can lock and unlock the outside lever electronically. It has a Grade 1 certification, is UL listed for fire doors, is ADA compatible, and can run on either 12V or 24V DC with automated voltage sensing. The L9090EL is fail safe: a power failure or power interruption releases the outside lever and allows free egress from both sides. Schlage L9090 Electrified Mortise Lock: Function and Fail Mode

The L9090 function means the outside lever is electrically controlled and there is no exterior cylinder. Entry from the outside is entirely managed by the access control system that powers the lock. When the access control panel sends the unlock signal, the outside lever engages the latch mechanism and allows the door to open. The inside lever always operates freely, providing immediate egress at all times regardless of power or electrical state.

L9090EL (Fail Safe): The outside lever is locked when power is applied (continuously locked state) and releases when power is cut. On a power failure, the outside lever unlocks automatically, which makes the EL version appropriate for exit doors, egress paths, and fire-rated openings where free passage is required on power loss per NFPA 101 and IBC egress requirements.

L9090EU (Fail Secure): The outside lever is unlocked when power is applied and locks when power is cut. A power failure locks the outside lever. This is the correct specification for server rooms, secured areas, and access-controlled entries where an uncontrolled power loss must not create an open condition.

Both EL and EU variants are available. The lock includes a case-mounted switch that allows field selection between EL and EU modes. Specify EL or EU in order for the default factory switch position.
