About this item
The Schlage L9496 is the mortise privacy lock specified wherever the question "is the room in use?" matters as much as security itself. Healthcare restrooms, hotel bathrooms, examination rooms, single-occupancy accessible restrooms, and private offices in institutional buildings all share the same requirement: people outside need to know if the space is occupied, and people inside need to get out instantly without any complicated maneuver. The L9496 handles both in one mechanical system.
How the Occupied Indicator Works
The lock operates through a coordinated deadbolt and latch mechanism. From inside, turning the thumbturn throws the 1" stainless steel deadbolt. That single action does two things at once: it locks the outside lever so no one can enter, and it displays the visual "Occupied" plate visible to anyone approaching the door. The outside lever is now mechanically blocked. There's no secondary lock button to forget and no separate indicator to activate. Locking the door and signaling occupancy happen in the same motion.
From inside, rotating the lever simultaneously retracts both the deadbolt and the 3/4" latch in a single action, unlocking the outside lever at the same time. Exit is immediate, no extra steps required. The inside lever is always free for egress, which is the correct behavior for any occupied space under ANSI and life safety code requirements.
From outside, a key retracts the deadbolt for emergency entry. This is the correct specification for healthcare, hospitality, and institutional buildings where staff may need to enter a locked room quickly. A thumbturn-only lock with no external override is wrong for these applications. The L9496 solves that with the standard 6-pin C keyway cylinder with two keys included.
Fire Safety and Construction
The L9496 includes a spring-loaded fusible link inside the lock case. In a fire condition, the fusible link melts and the deadbolt retracts automatically, keeping the door from being trapped locked during evacuation. The lock is UL Listed for use on 3-hour fire-rated door assemblies. This certification matters on healthcare corridor doors and institutional restrooms that fall within fire-rated wall assemblies.
The L9000 Series case construction backs this up: heavy-gauge fully wrapped steel case, all-metal zinc dichromate-plated working parts, and a hub blocking plate that prevents external spindle manipulation attacks. The break-away spindle adds another layer of protection against forced entry while still allowing key override to function correctly.
Field Reversible, No Disassembly Required
The L9000-Series lock body reverses handing in the field without opening the case. This is a practical advantage on mixed-handing door schedules where installers need to adjust hardware at the door without returning product or ordering handing-specific locks in advance. The floating mounting tabs automatically adjust to a beveled door edge, and external spring cages allow trim retrofit without pulling the lock body.
