The Schlage L9496-17 is a Grade 1 L Series mortise lock with a privacy function and built-in occupied indicator. The L9496 is Schlage's mortise-based occupancy indicator lock: the thumbturn inside throws a deadbolt, that deadbolt locks the outside lever, and simultaneously changes the indicator plate on the outside trim from vacant to occupied. One action does three things at once.

 

How the Occupied Indicator Actually Works

 

Most privacy locks just lock a lever. The L9496 goes further. When the person inside turns the thumbturn to throw the deadbolt, three things happen at the same moment: the deadbolt extends and engages the strike, the outside lever locks rigid so it can't be turned from outside, and the "OCCUPIED" plate becomes visible on the outside trim. When the person inside is ready to leave, rotating the inside lever once retracts both the deadbolt and the latchbolt simultaneously and unlocks the outside lever. A single motion clears everything.

 

Emergency access from outside is by key - the outside cylinder retracts the deadbolt even when the thumbturn is holding it thrown. This is the correct function for single-occupancy restrooms, nursing rooms, lactation rooms, exam rooms, meditation spaces, prayer rooms, and any space where staff or management needs emergency override capability but routine entry should always be controlled from inside.

 

The 17 Lever and What It Tells You

 

The suffix on the L9496-17 identifies the lever design. Lever 17 is a Schlage L Series lever style paired with a 2-9/16-inch diameter rose. The B-size rose (2-9/16") is the larger of the two standard L Series rose options - larger than the A rose (2-1/8") and sized for openings where the rose needs to cover more of the door face around the bore. If your project uses A-size roses, you'd specify a different lever suffix - 03A, 06A, or 07A. The L9496-17 specifically means lever design 17 on a 2-9/16-inch rose.

 

180-Degree Indicator Visibility

 

Schlage's indicator trim uses a patented 180-degree viewing window that wraps three sides of the outside trim assembly. The window is large enough to read the occupancy status from across a corridor - not just when standing directly in front of the door. In healthcare and educational facilities where staff need to check room status from a distance without walking to the door, this visibility matters. The window is polycarbonate, not glass, so it withstands the same abuse as the rest of the trim.

 

L9496 vs Basic Privacy: The Deadbolt Difference

 

A standard L Series privacy function (like the L9460) uses a thumbturn that locks the outside lever without throwing a deadbolt. The L9496 throws an actual deadbolt. That deadbolt provides a stronger mechanical resistance against forced entry compared to a lever-only lockout, and it's what drives the indicator mechanism. If your specification requires visible occupancy indication, the L9496 is the correct function - the L9460 won't give you the indicator.
