About this item
The Stanley QED311-36-689 is the 36-inch rim exit device from the QED300 Series, configured with hex key dogging and supplied in 689 Aluminum Painted finish. If you've been searching for "stanley exit devices," "stanley panic bar," or "dormakaba qed300," this is the correct product. Stanley Security Solutions has been acquired by dormakaba, and the QED300 Series is now part of the dormakaba commercial hardware line. The QED311 model number, specifications, and installation footprint have not changed under the dormakaba brand.
What Finish 689 Means
Finish 689 in the dormakaba and Stanley hardware system designates Aluminum Painted finish, also listed as AL on some spec sheets. It's a painted aluminum surface applied over the aluminum extruded housing, not an anodized or plated finish. 689 is the standard commercial finish for the QED300 Series and matches most aluminum storefront framing, hollow metal doors in standard aluminum paint, and aluminum-finished hardware suites. The QED300 Series is also available in 690 Painted Duranodic Bronze for darker frame environments.
QED311: What the Model Number Tells You
The QED300 Series uses a three-digit suffix to identify the device configuration. The 311 code designates a rim device with hex key dogging. QED312 is the rim device with cylinder dogging. QED313 is the fire-rated rim version without dogging. The 36 in QED311-36 is the bar length in inches, which fits standard 3-foot door widths. A 48-inch version is available for wider doors.
Field Sizeable: 36" Adjusts to 32"
The 36" QED311 can be field trimmed down to 32" without ordering a different part. This matters on older buildings and retrofit applications where the door opening is narrower than the 36" standard. Cut the bar on-site using the field sizing instructions and the device installs cleanly without ordering a custom length.
How the Hex Dogging Works
A standard 1/4" hex key (Allen wrench) inserted into the dogging port holds the pushbar in the retracted position. This allows the door to operate as a free-passage door without pressing the pushbar on each use. The dogging is released by turning the hex key in the opposite direction, restoring the panic exit function. On the fire-rated QED313, dogging is not included because fire doors cannot be held open in the latched-retracted position.
Construction and Certification
The QED311 uses a thru-bolted chassis design rather than surface-mounted fasteners. Thru-bolts pass through the door and draw both mounting plates together under tension, which is a stronger attachment method that resists pry attacks and repeated impact loads. The latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4" throw and a deadlatch feature that prevents the bolt from being slipped with a credit card or shim. The strike is a stainless steel body with a plated steel roller.
The device is tested to significantly exceed the 500,000 cycles required for ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certification. UL listed for panic hardware. ADA compliant per ANSI A117.1 Section 404.2.6. Non-handed and field reversible. Minimum rim stile width required is 3-7/8". Standard door thickness is 1-3/4", with thick door kit available for doors up to 2-3/4". Projection is 3-1/2" from door face. Device height is 8-5/16". Backset is 2-1/4" standard.
Function on this listing is exit-only from the factory. Outside trim function is determined by the QET Series trim ordered separately. Keyway options for trim include Schlage C, Kwikset, Sargent LA, Yale GA, SFIC, and less cylinder configurations.
