About this item
The Accentra 1900 Series is the traditional surface-mounted door closer from Yale, now sold under the Accentra brand from ASSA ABLOY. If you searched "1902/4", "yale 1900 door closer", "accentra yale door closers", "1900 series", or "vintage yale door closer" - this is the product. The 1900 Series is one of the longest-running traditional door closer designs in commercial hardware. It's the correct specification when an opening requires conventional closer styling that matches the architectural character of historic, period, or traditionally detailed buildings rather than the contemporary low-profile appearance of modern commercial closers.
What "Traditional" Means on the 1900 Series
Most modern commercial door closers use a low-profile body with a cover that sits close to the door face. The styling is sleek and contemporary, designed to minimize visual presence. The Yale 1900 Series takes the opposite approach - a distinctively shaped body with a rounded aluminum alloy shell that reads as a purposeful architectural element rather than a minimized piece of hardware. On historic courthouses, institutional buildings, churches, universities, and commercial properties with period or traditional decor, the 1900's profile is the correct specification. It coordinates with the visual language of the building rather than contrasting against it.
1902/4 vs 1905/6: The Two Models in This Listing
The 1900 Series uses a one-size closer shell concept - the same physical body size for every spring power setting. Only two spring size ranges cover the entire door size spectrum, which simplifies stocking and installation.
The 1902/4 handles spring sizes 2 through 4. This covers the majority of standard commercial interior and light exterior doors - most offices, corridors, restroom doors, and similar openings. If you're unsure which model to order for a standard commercial interior door, 1902/4 is the starting specification.
The 1905/6 handles spring sizes 5 and 6. This covers heavier, wider, or exterior doors subject to wind pressure - large entrance doors, heavy hollow metal doors, and any application where size 4 is insufficient to drive the door reliably to a fully closed and latched position. Both models include spring power adjustment, so the installer can set the exact closing force within the applicable spring range at the door.
Rack and Pinion Operation and Adjustable Controls
The 1900 Series uses rack and pinion mechanism - a pinion gear driven by a rack inside the closer body. This is the standard mechanism for surface-mounted commercial door closers. The regulating valve controls both the closing sweep speed and the latch speed independently. The adjustable backcheck cushions the door on opening, engaging before the door reaches its full-open stop to reduce impact on the door frame, hinges, and closer arm.
Three different arm assembly lengths are available to accommodate different door widths. The correct arm length for the specific door width affects how precisely the closing force is applied through the swing arc. Each arm length is designed for a defined range of door widths.
Standard Arm vs Parallel Arm Options
The 1902/4 and 1905/6 both ship in standard arm (regular arm) and parallel arm (PA prefix) configurations. Standard arm mounts the closer on the pull side of the door with the arm extending to a bracket on the frame soffit. Parallel arm mounting places the closer on the push side with the shoe running parallel to the closer body - used when the closer can't be mounted on the pull side or when a more tamper-resistant push-side installation is required.
The PA1902/4 and PA1905/6 designations identify the parallel arm versions. Delayed action versions (handed) are also available in the 1900 Series - specify PR prefix.
Yale 1900 Door Closer: What Hasn't Changed
The 1900 Series has been manufactured in an ISO 9001 facility continuously. The aluminum alloy shell, rack and pinion mechanism, and spring power adjustment remain the same as what Yale specifiers have been putting on buildings for decades. The closer is now labeled Accentra rather than Yale, but the product specifications, installation templates, and arm compatibility carry forward directly.
