The Cal-Royal NM8080 is an extra heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset from the NM series. Storeroom Function F07: How It Works at the Door

The NM8080 is ANSI function F07. The outside lever is permanently rigid - it won't turn regardless of position. The only way to retract the latch from outside is by key. The inside lever is always free. Anyone inside can grip the lever and exit immediately at any time without a key, and the auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt the moment the door closes into the frame, preventing shimming.

This is the correct function for pharmaceutical storage, server rooms, restricted supply areas, electrical rooms, and any opening where all external access needs to be keyed but egress must always be available. Cal-Royal also makes the NM8070 (classroom function F05, where key locks or unlocks the outside lever) and the NM8050 (office/entrance function F04, where a turn button inside locks the outside lever). The NM8080 storeroom is the most restrictive of the three - every entry from outside requires a key, every time.

Forged Brass Levers: The Quality Differentiator

The NM8080 levers are forged brass, not pressure cast zinc. Forged brass handles the kind of daily torque load that commercial doors take better than die-cast alternatives, and they exceed ADA requirements without the dimensional tolerance issues that can affect cast components over time. Each lever has its own individual spring to prevent lever sag - this is specified separately per lever rather than using a shared spring assembly, which means one side can be serviced or adjusted without affecting the other.

Deadbolt and Case Construction

The deadbolt is 1-inch throw, brass with chrome plating and hardened steel rollers. Hardened steel rollers resist sawing attack - a standard attack method on exposed deadbolts. The lockcase is heavy gauge steel with zinc chromate plating for corrosion resistance. The front plate is heavy gauge steel at 8 inches by 1-1/4 inches, accommodating both flat doors and doors with a standard 1/8-inch in 2-inch bevel. An armored front plate of wrought brass attaches over the lockcase front with machine screws, concealing the mounting hardware from the pull side of the door.

The guard bolt (auxiliary latch) is extruded brass with chrome plating. The stop works - the mechanism that controls whether the outside lever is active - is rocker type brass, chrome-plated. Both components are overbuilt for high-cycle institutional use.
