How the NM8440 Privacy with Deadbolt Function Works

The NM8440 is ANSI Function F19, which means it's a keyless privacy function with a full 1" deadbolt. Here's exactly how it operates. The latch bolt is retracted by the lever from either side at all times when the deadbolt is not engaged. When the occupant turns the inside thumbturn, two things happen simultaneously: the deadbolt extends 1" into the strike, and the outside lever is locked out completely. No key, no handle turn from outside will open the door. From the inside, rotating the inside lever simultaneously retracts the deadbolt and the latch bolt and unlocks the outside lever in one motion, for immediate egress without any extra steps. For emergency access from outside, a building manager inserts a small coin or emergency tool into the access hole in the outside trim and rotates, retracting the deadbolt without damaging the lock or the door.

This is the correct function for occupied spaces where momentary privacy is required, as distinct from ANSI F19B (the NM8445, which adds a visual "OCCUPIED" indicator and outside coin turn) or ANSI F22 (privacy bedroom/bath without a deadbolt).
