About this item
The mortise exit device is the highest-security configuration in the standard exit device lineup. Where a rim device uses a surface-mounted rim latch and a vertical rod device uses top-and-bottom rods, a mortise exit device uses a mortise lock body fitted into the door itself, with the same lock case construction used in high-security commercial mortise locks. The Corbin Russwin ED5600 combines that mortise security with the panic egress performance of the full ED5000 Series. It's Grade 1, UL 305 listed for panic hardware, certified to ANSI A156.3, and backed by a 5-year warranty. The ED5600 is for standard width stile applications on wood and metal doors. The ED5600A carries the fire-rated "A" label for fire door applications.

Why Specify a Mortise Exit Device Over a Rim Device
A rim device mounts on the door face and latches using a surface rim strike. The latch point is entirely external. A mortise exit device fits into the door prep the same way a standard mortise lock does, with the lock case inside the door thickness and the latch projecting into a mortise strike in the frame. The mortise configuration provides greater resistance to forced entry because the lock case is embedded in the door, not surface-mounted, and the 2-piece mechanical latch with auxiliary deadlocking provides positive latching that resists shim and loid attacks that can compromise surface rim latches.
For high-security school entrances, government building egress doors, and institutional facilities where the door specification already calls for a mortise prep, the ED5600 is the natural fit. It also provides a more finished appearance on the door face, with no surface-mounted rim case or vertical rods visible from inside the corridor.

ED5600 vs. ED5600A: Fire Rating
The standard ED5600 is the non-fire-rated version for applications where the door is not fire-labeled. The ED5600A carries the UL A label three-hour fire rating for fire-rated door assemblies in single door openings up to 4' x 8' and double door openings up to 8' x 8'. If your opening is fire-rated, specify ED5600A. The "A" designation indicates the specific fire label class and must match your door label. Always confirm fire door label requirements with your AHJ before specifying.
