Ives 347 Dual Adjustable Ball Catch

The Ives 347 addresses both installation variables with dual adjustment: the threaded barrel compensates for different door clearances, and the spring tension is separately adjustable to match the closing feel the application requires.

Most ball catches adjust only one of these. The 347's dual adjustment handles both on the same unit, which makes it the correct specification when standard door clearance is inconsistent across a set of doors, when replacement is going into an existing bore that may be slightly off-center, or when the holding strength needs fine-tuning after installation without replacing the unit. Dual Adjustment Explained

First adjustment is door clearance via the threaded barrel. The barrel that houses the ball threads in or out to move the ball forward or backward relative to the door face. When the door has more gap between the edge and the jamb face, the barrel threads out to position the ball further forward so it still reaches the strike depression. When the gap is tighter, the barrel threads in. This compensates for normal variation in door hanging without requiring shimming or custom strike placement.

Second adjustment is spring tension. A set screw or adjustment mechanism controls how tightly the spring holds the ball against the strike. Higher tension means the door holds more firmly and requires more pull to open. Lower tension means light pressure opens it. On interior residential doors, lighter tension is typical. On cabinet doors or doors that see drafts, higher tension prevents unwanted drift. Adjusting both independently after installation gets the catch exactly right for each opening.
