About this item
The dormakaba 77BA-UNC is a 7-pin Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) shipped uncombinated in the BEST A keyway, satin brass finish (US4). The part number tells you everything: 77 means 7-pin, BA means BEST A keyway, UNC means uncombinated - the core ships without any key cuts set, ready for a locksmith or key shop to pin it to whatever combination your key system requires.
This was previously sold under the DORMA brand before the 2015 Dorma/Kaba merger formed dormakaba. If your hardware schedule or existing project specs reference "DORMA 77BA" or "Dorma core," this is the direct current product.
What "Uncombinated" Means and When to Order It
Combinated means the core is already pinned to a specific key combination and ships with cut keys. You order it when you know the exact key cuts needed and want the core ready to install.
Uncombinated means the core ships with pins in but no key cuts established. It requires a locksmith with the BEST A keyway specifications and a pin kit to set the bitting before the core will operate with any key. Nickel silver BA keyway blanks are included.
You order uncombinated cores when you're setting up a new master key system from scratch, when a key control department handles all pinning in-house, when cores are being added to an existing key system that a local locksmith will key, or when you need to stock cores before your key schedule is finalized.
If you need the core already keyed to a specific combination, contact American Locksets to order a combinated 77BA.
77BA vs 76BA: The Pin Count Difference
The 77 series and 76 series are the same BEST A keyway in dormakaba's SFIC line. The number prefix tells you the pin count.
76BA-UNC: 6-pin core, BEST A keyway, uncombinated.
77BA-UNC (this product): 7-pin core, BEST A keyway, uncombinated.
Seven-pin cores provide a significantly larger number of possible key combinations than six-pin cores. This matters in large facilities where master key system designers need key combination space to accommodate hundreds or thousands of keyholder levels without duplicates. If your facility already runs a BEST 7-pin system, specify 77BA. If it's a 6-pin system, specify 76BA.
Compatible Locksets and Housings
The 77BA-UNC is an SFIC core - it installs into any lockset or cylinder housing that accepts Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC). That includes locksets from BEST, Arrow, Falcon, dormakaba (Dorma), Stanley, and other manufacturers who build their hardware to accept SFIC cores in the standard BEST footprint.
The core is removed and installed using a control key - no tools, no removing the lockset from the door. This is the core feature of SFIC systems: rekeying is a matter of swapping cores with the control key, which can be done by building staff without locksmith involvement after the initial setup.
