About this item
The Schlage 23-030C is a full size interchangeable core with the standard C keyway, supplied keyed and bitted 6-pin, 1/2-inch plug diameter, industry-standard figure-eight format, non-handed, and compatible with any Schlage FSIC or LFIC prepped housing including the ND Series, AL Series, and AD Series platforms. American Locksets stock the 23-030C.
What a Full Size Interchangeable Core Is
A full size interchangeable core FSIC, also called LFIC (large format interchangeable core) by Schlage is a removable cylinder that slides in and out of a compatible lock housing using a control key. The core contains all the key-cutting information: the pin stack heights, the keyway, and the biting pattern. The housing in the door never changes. Only the core gets swapped.
This is the fundamental difference between an FSIC system and a conventional cylinder. With a conventional cylinder, rekeying requires disassembling the lock or calling a locksmith to remove and repin the plug in place. With an FSIC, changing the key takes seconds: insert the control key, rotate approximately 15 degrees clockwise, and the core pulls out of the housing. Drop in a new core, remove the control key, and the door is rekeyed. No tools, no lock removal, no service call.
The Schlage 23-030C is the C keyway version of Schlage's FSIC platform. The "C" keyway is Schlage's most widely distributed open keyway, the same keyway used in standard Schlage commercial cylinders and residential deadbolts. It's the default when no keyway restriction is required and you want the broadest key availability and the most straightforward locksmith service access. The "23-030" is the FSIC body part number. The "C" suffix designates the C keyway, keyed and bitted with 2 nickel silver keys.
FSIC vs SFIC: Choosing the Right Format
This is the most common point of confusion when ordering Schlage cores. FSIC and SFIC look similar but are not interchangeable.
FSIC (Full Size Interchangeable Core / LFIC) the 23-030C uses a 1/2-inch plug diameter and a larger figure-eight format. It fits housings prepped for FSIC or LFIC, including Schlage ND Series cylindrical locks, AL Series mortise locks, AD Series deadbolts, and select Kaba/Simplex push-button locks with "S" prep.
SFIC (Small Format Interchangeable Core) uses a smaller plug and a smaller figure-eight format. SFIC cores and FSIC cores do not fit the same housings. If your lock body is prepped for SFIC, the 23-030C will not fit regardless of keyway or finish.
Check your lock housing specification before ordering. If the lock body or trim sheet says "LFIC prep," "FSIC prep," or "large format IC," the 23-030C is the correct core. If it says "SFIC" or "small format IC," you need a different core family entirely.
How the Control Key Works
The control key is not a regular operating key. It's a special-bited key that releases the core from the housing by engaging a separate control shear line. Operating keys the day-to-day keys that unlock the door cannot remove the core. This is the security architecture of the FSIC system: only the person holding the control key can remove or change cores.
The Schlage 23-030C does not include a control key. Control keys must be ordered separately. The control key is the most security-critical element in an FSIC system. Store control keys in a secured key cabinet, log every issuance, and limit possession to facilities management and authorized security personnel. A lost control key requires immediate planning for core replacement across all affected openings in the affected system.
C Keyway and Master Key Systems
The C keyway operates within Schlage's standard keyway family. Cores ordered as 23-030C ship 1-bited (keyed different) each core has a unique key cut and comes with 2 nickel silver keys. For keyed-alike groups, specify KA with the matching bitting. For master key systems, specify the master key and subordinate key levels at the time of ordering FSIC cores are pinned to a master key system specification just like conventional cylinders, and the master key hierarchy is built into the core at the factory.
If your building already uses a Schlage C keyway master key system and you're adding FSIC-capable locks, the new 23-030C cores can be incorporated into the existing system.
