About this item
The Schlage 23-030 is a full size interchangeable core 6-pin, 1/2-inch plug diameter, industry standard "figure 8" format, non-handed, available in multiple keyways and finishes, and compatible with Schlage FSIC and LFIC prepped housings across the ND Series cylindrical, AL Series, and AD Series platforms. American Locksets stock the 23-030 in keyed-different, keyed-alike, and construction configurations.
What "23-030" Means and Why It Matters
The 23-030 is Schlage's part number for the FSIC core body itself. The numbers after the part number specify the keyway configuration. So 23-030-C is the standard C keyway, 23-030-S123 is the Everest 29 S123 restricted keyway, 23-030-C123 is the C123 keyway, and so on. If you're ordering for an existing Schlage key system, confirm which keyway your building is currently running before specifying. Ordering the wrong keyway means the core won't operate with your existing keys regardless of format compatibility.
The term "FSIC" and "LFIC" (large format interchangeable core) refer to the same core format, the full-size figure-eight shaped cylinder that slides into a compatible housing and is secured with a control key. Schlage uses both terms. If your lock body or cylinder housing is marked "FSIC prep" or "LFIC prep," the 23-030 fits it.
How the FSIC System Works
The fundamental advantage of an interchangeable core system over a conventional cylinder is the speed and security of rekeying. With a conventional cylinder, rekeying requires a locksmith, tools, and either removing the lock from the door or working at the lock face. With an FSIC core, rekeying a door takes seconds: insert the control key, turn it approximately 15 degrees clockwise, and the core releases from the housing with no other tools. Drop in the new core, remove the control key, and the door is rekeyed. No door removal, no disassembly.
The control key is the critical security element of this system; it's the credential that authorizes core removal. The 23-030 does not include a control key. It must be ordered separately. Store control keys with strict access control; a lost control key compromises the physical security of the entire FSIC system.
User rights are stored in the key cut and the core pinning. The 6-pin format on the 23-030 gives significantly more key combination capacity than a 5-pin core, which matters on large master key systems where crosskeying avoidance is critical.
Construction vs Permanent Keying
The 23-030 is available in construction variants; the ICA ORG (A keyway) and ICC ORG (C keyway) construction cores carry an orange applied finish that visually identifies them as temporary. During construction, all doors go in with the same construction master key. After turnover, construction cores are pulled with the control key and replaced with permanent cores keyed to the building's permanent key system. No lock removal, no rekeying in place the cores swap in seconds per door.
Housing Compatibility
The 23-030 fits any Schlage FSIC or LFIC prepped housing. That covers Schlage ND Series cylindrical locks, AL Series mortise locks, AD Series deadbolts, and select Kaba/Simplex push-button lock housings with "S" prep. It does not fit small format interchangeable core (SFIC) housings that use a different, smaller figure-eight core format. If your locks use SFIC, the 23-030 is the wrong core.
