Dormakaba Exit Device Trims
Dormakaba exit device trims are the outside lever, pull, and trim assemblies that mount on the pull side of a door fitted with a dormakaba (formerly Dorma or Kaba) exit device. The trim controls how a person enters through the door from the secured side: by key, by always-active lever, or only when the exit device is dogged open. Every trim in this category is compatible with specific dormakaba exit device series, and specifying the wrong trim for the wrong device, or the wrong function for the application, creates a project delay that costs more to resolve than getting it right upfront.
The Dorma to Kaba to Dormakaba Brand History
If you've been searching for "dorma exit device trims," "kaba exit device trims," or "dormakaba exit devices," all three names refer to the same brand family. Dorma and Kaba were separate architectural hardware manufacturers that merged in 2015 to form dormakaba. Products previously sold under the Dorma name, including the 8000 Series, 9000 Series, and Y-Series wide stile trim, are now branded as dormakaba. The model numbers have not changed. A dormakaba 9C23 is the same product as the former Dorma 9C23. Catalog searches under Dorma, Kaba, or dormakaba all return the same hardware.
Dormakaba Exit Device Trim Series Overview
8000 Series Exit Device Trims
The dormakaba 8000 Series is the economical and reliable exit device line for paired doors requiring rim, surface vertical rod, or surface vertical rod less bottom rod configurations. The 8C08 is the trim for 8000 Series devices with a C (curved) lever, classroom function. Key locks or unlocks the outside lever. Schlage C keyway is standard. The 8C23 is the passage function trim for 8000 Series, where the lever is always active and no cylinder is required for entry. The 8R23 is the passage trim with an R (rectangular) lever, also always active, for 8000 Series devices.
9000 Series Exit Device Trims
The dormakaba 9000 Series is the heavy-duty line for high-impact institutional and commercial applications: schools, hospitals, government buildings, and factories. All 9000 Series devices and trim are designed for 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" thick doors. The trim naming follows the same convention as the 8000 Series, with the first number identifying the device series and the letter identifying the lever style.
The 9C03 is the nightlatch trim with a C lever for 9000 Series devices. Key locks or unlocks the outside lever, key is only removable when in the locked position. The 9C08 is the classroom trim with a C lever, key locks or unlocks the lever from outside. The 9C23 and 9R23 are the passage trims in C and R lever profiles, both non-keyed and non-handed, for 9000 Series devices including the 9100, 9300, and 9400 Sub-Series.
Dormakaba Wide Stile Trim: YR and YC Series
YR09 and YC09 Wide Stile Nightlatch Trims
The dormakaba YR09 is the wide stile escutcheon lever trim with an R (rectangular) lever, nightlatch function, for 9000 Series exit devices. Key retracts the latchbolt and is only removable in the locked position, providing controlled outside entry without allowing the key to be left in the unlocked state. Schlage C keyway is standard.
The YC09 is the same wide stile nightlatch escutcheon trim with a C (curved) lever profile. Both the YR09 and YC09 are specified on wide stile applications where the larger escutcheon plate is needed to cover the full width of the door stile.
The wide stile Y-Series trim designation tells you: Y = Y-series wide stile escutcheon, R or C = lever profile, 09 = ANSI function code. Function 08 is the classroom/entrance function where key locks and unlocks the lever. Function 09 is the nightlatch function where key retracts the latchbolt and is removable only when locked. Function 23 is passage with no cylinder.
Pull Trim and Non-Keyed Options
Several trims in this category provide pull-only or thumbpiece outside access without a key cylinder. The HRT05 is a 3" wide rectangular pull with thumbpiece in satin stainless steel finish. The PRT Series provides flat plate pull trim in 3" x 16" profiles with rectangular pull handles for applications requiring a non-keyed pull exit trim.
Reading Dormakaba Exit Device Trim Model Numbers
Every dormakaba trim model number encodes the compatible device series, lever style, and function. For the 8000 and 9000 Series trims, the format is: device series number, lever profile letter, function code number. 9C08 = 9000 Series, C lever, function 08 (classroom). 9R23 = 9000 Series, R lever, function 23 (passage, no cylinder).
For Y-Series wide stile trim: Y = wide stile escutcheon, then lever profile, then function. YR09 = Y-series wide stile, R lever, function 09 (nightlatch). YC09 = Y-series wide stile, C lever, function 09.
The SC-KD suffix on any model means Schlage C keyway, keyed differently. The J suffix designates SFIC prep less cylinders for interchangeable core systems.

Why American Locksets for Dormakaba and Dorma Exit Device Trims
Dorma exit device trim, kaba exit device trim, and dormakaba exit devices share one ordering challenge: the trim and device must be matched to the same series and the function must be specified for the application before the hardware ships. Getting the series wrong means the trim won't mount. Getting the function wrong means the door operates incorrectly from day one. At American Locksets, we've been stocking and shipping dormakaba hardware since 2001, through the Dorma to Kaba to dormakaba brand transition, without missing a step. We know the Y-Series from the 9000 Series, and we know which trim function code to recommend for a stairwell re-entry door versus a classroom corridor. Free shipping on orders over $300. Same-day shipping on in-stock items.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dormakaba Exit Device Trims
Q: What is the difference between Dorma, Kaba, and dormakaba exit device trims?
Same brand, different names by year. Dorma and Kaba merged in 2015 to form dormakaba. Model numbers like 9C08 and YR09 are unchanged regardless of which name appears on the packaging.
Q: Are dormakaba exit device trims interchangeable between 8000 and 9000 Series?
No. Trim is series-specific:
-
8000 Series trim (8C08, 8C23, 8R23) fits 8000 Series devices only
-
9000 Series trim (9C03, 9C08, 9R23) fits 9000 Series devices only
Q: What does the function number mean on dormakaba exit device trims?
Function codes identify outside access behavior:
-
Function 03/09: Nightlatch, key retracts latchbolt
-
Function 08: Classroom, key locks or unlocks lever
-
Function 23: Passage, lever always active, no cylinder
Q: What is the difference between the C lever and R lever on dormakaba trims?
C = curved bow lever profile. R = rectangular straight lever profile. Both deliver identical security and function. The choice is architectural preference and project hardware schedule consistency.
Q: What does the SC-KD suffix mean on dormakaba exit device trim model numbers?
SC = Schlage C keyway. KD = keyed different. The trim cylinder is provided to be cut to a unique key, not matched to any other lock in the order.
Q: What door thickness do dormakaba 9000 Series trims fit?
Standard door thickness for all 9000 Series devices and trim is 1-3/4" to 2-1/4". For thicker doors, consult dormakaba technical service before ordering.
