About this item
The dormakaba QCL170 is the storeroom function lock from the QCL100 Series, Grade 1 heavy-duty cylindrical lock platform. If you searched "qcl171" and landed here-you're very close. The QCL171 is the SFIC version of this same lock: storeroom function, less core, prepped for Small Format Interchangeable Core. The QCL170 ships with a conventional cylinder. Same lock body, same function, same clutch mechanism-the only difference is the cylinder format. If your facility runs an SFIC key system, the QCL171 is your product. If you use conventional keying, the QCL170 is the one.
The QCL100 Series was originally sold under the Stanley Commercial Hardware brand. Dormakaba acquired Stanley's commercial hardware business and carries the QCL100 Series forward under the dormakaba brand. The model numbers, function codes, and specifications carry over directly.
ANSI F86 Storeroom Function: Exactly How It Works
ANSI F86 is storeroom/closet. The outside lever is always locked-it never turns, never retracts the latch, regardless of any button or setting. Entrance from outside requires a key every single time. From inside, the lever is always free. Anyone inside exits immediately without a key, without a button, without a credential. The auxiliary deadlatch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes, preventing shimming.
This is the correct function for server rooms, utility closets, medical supply storage, pharmacies, equipment rooms, and any space where key-controlled entry is required every time from the outside, but egress is always unconditional. Nobody accidentally leaves this door unlocked from outside-the outside lever can never be operated without a key, period.
The Clutch Feature: What It Does and Why It Matters
The QCL170 includes a clutch mechanism on the outside lever. When the outside lever is in its permanently locked state, the lever physically disengages from the internal latch mechanism. This means someone can grab and twist the outside lever with as much force as they want and they're not transmitting that force to the lock chassis, the spindle, or the spring cage inside.
On a standard storeroom lock without clutch, repeated forced lever attempts eventually wear out the mechanism-bent spindles, cracked spring cages, sloppy lever action. On high-traffic commercial doors in schools, hospitals, and institutional settings where people test locked doors constantly, that wear adds up fast. The clutch prevents it entirely. The lever just spins free.
Through-Bolt Design and Lever Sag Prevention
The QCL170 uses a through-bolt design. The mounting bolts pass through the door from outside to inside rather than threading only into the rose. Through-bolting distributes clamping force across the full door thickness and keeps both sides of the trim assembly tight to the door face over years of use. The heavy-duty spring tension built into the chassis also works against lever sag-the outside lever stays level and returns positively to position after each operation rather than gradually drooping over time.
