About this item
Three butt hinges on a commercial door create three concentrated stress points. Every time the door opens and closes, the load transfers through those three small pivot points to the frame. Over years of high-traffic use, frames crack, hinges pull loose, and doors start to sag. A continuous hinge distributes that same load along the entire height of the door, from top to bottom, with no concentrated stress points at all. The Ives 702 does this in 14 gauge Type 304 stainless steel, ANSI A156.26 Grade 1 certified, UL Listed to UL10C for 3-hour fire-rated door assemblies, and rated for doors weighing up to 600 pounds.
The 702 is the full surface configuration in the Ives stainless steel continuous hinge line. Full surface means both leaves mount on the face of the door and the face of the frame. No routing, no mortising, no modification to the door or frame prep required. It's the correct specification for retrofit installations where door modification isn't feasible and for new construction where surface mounting is specified. Why Type 304 Stainless Steel Matters
The Ives 702 is 14 gauge Type 304 stainless steel on both leaves. Type 304 is the standard austenitic stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance for commercial interiors, exterior-adjacent locations, food service environments, healthcare facilities, humid and wet areas, and coastal buildings away from direct salt spray. It holds up in conditions where painted steel or aluminum would corrode or discolor over time. The barrel assembly uses a stainless steel pin running through twin self-lubricated nylon bearings, which eliminates metal-on-metal friction, prevents squeaking, and removes the need for periodic lubrication over the life of the hinge.

Pair of doors: Hinge side clearance 1/8", Lock side clearance 3/16", Frame irregularity 1/16", Beveled door clearance 1/16", Square edged total 1/2" (1/4" each door), Beveled edged total 9/16" (9/32" each door).
Full Surface vs. Full Mortise: Choosing the Right Configuration
The Ives 702 full surface mounts on door and frame faces without modifying the door prep. The Ives 705 full mortise full wrap mounts with both leaves mortised into the door edge and frame, providing a flush appearance on the door face. The Ives 715 is a full mortise half wrap for specific frame conditions. For retrofit applications where door and frame modification isn't acceptable, the 702 full surface is the correct specification. For new construction where mortise prep is part of the door schedule, the 705 or 715 may be preferred. All three are stainless steel with the same ANSI and UL certifications.
85" Length and Field Cutting
The 85" length covers standard commercial door heights up to 7'1" in a single piece. The hinge can be field cut to shorter lengths during installation without special equipment. If the cut is more than 6" from the bottom of the hinge, Ives recommends confirming whether additional modifications are needed to maintain proper function and structural integrity.
