PHI E2103 Electric Lock/Unlock Exit Device: How It Works

The E2103 is not an electric latch retraction (ELR) device. ELR retracts the latchbolt remotely. The E2103 electric lock/unlock function operates differently: the 24VDC solenoid electronically locks or unlocks the outside trim lever rather than the latch itself. When the trim is unlocked by the access control panel, the 4908A outside lever engages the latch mechanism and allows the door to open by key rotation. When the trim is locked, the outside lever is disabled and entry requires an electrical unlock command from the access control system.

The inside touchbar always provides immediate free egress from the interior at all times, independent of the electric state or power status.

Fail Mode: FSE Standard, Field Convertible to FS

The E2103 ships from the factory as Fail Secure (FSE). Power off means the outside trim is locked. Power on means the trim is unlocked for entry. This is the correct default for secured entry doors where a power failure must not create an unsecured opening.

The device can be field-converted to Fail Safe (FS) mode without returning to the factory. In FS mode, power on locks the trim and power off releases it, which is the correct configuration for fire egress doors and openings governed by life safety code requirements.
