About this item
The Sargent 1431-UO is the universal arm configuration of Sargent's Power glide 1431 Series surface-mounted door closer- one body, one arm package, three mounting positions, Grade 1 performance, 15 million-plus cycles tested, and a 30-year limited warranty. American Locksets stocks the 1431-UO. Free shipping on orders over $300.
What "UO" Means and Why It Matters
The "UO" designation is the arm configuration, and it's the most flexible option in the 1431 line. UO stands for Universal arm- the package ships with the brackets and arm hardware to install the closer in three positions from one box:
Standard application (hinge/pull side): The closer mounts on the door face, hinge side. The arm connects to the frame. This is the most common commercial installation and the most protected from weather. Maximum door opening is approximately 160 degrees with the standard cover.
Top jamb application (for reveals up to 2"): The closer mounts on the frame face above the door. The foot mounts on the push side of the door. Correct when the door swings outward or when the door face doesn't have adequate mounting surface.
Parallel arm application (push side): The closer mounts on the push side of the door with the arm running parallel to the face of the door under the frame. The arm doesn't project into the room, and the door can open further than in the top jamb. Ideal for narrow face frames, deep reveal conditions, or anywhere the arm needs to stay out of the traffic path.
One body, one package, all three. That's the practical value of the UO configuration- no guessing which arm type to order, no callbacks to the supplier if the installation condition changes on site.
Sargent 1431 Powerglide: The Full Specification
The 1431 has been the institutional and commercial closer specification standard for decades, and it holds that position on hardware schedules for the same reason every time: the mechanical platform is overbuilt for the application, and the adjustment system stays accessible without disassembling anything.
The body is one-piece high silicon content aluminum alloy- the same material choice that gives the 1431 its corrosion resistance and structural integrity in exterior and high-humidity applications. The rack and pinion mechanism is heat-treated for wear resistance across the closure's full cycle life. The 1-1/2-inch piston provides the door control authority that smaller piston closers can't deliver consistently on heavy or wide commercial doors.
The arm engages 1/2 inch over a 7/16-inch square spindle- that's a tight, wear-resistant joint that doesn't loosen with cycle accumulation the way smaller engagement dimensions do. Arms are heavy-duty forged steel, interchangeable with the Sargent 281 and 351 Series, which matters on renovation projects where you're mixing existing and new hardware.
The Valve System: What Makes the 1431 Easy to Maintain
The 1431's separate brass low-sensitivity control valves are the feature that field installers and facility maintenance teams care about most. You get independent adjustment of door closing speed, latching speed, backcheck, and optional delayed action- each on its own valve, each adjustable with a standard 1/8-inch Allen wrench.
All valves are captured- they can't be accidentally removed during adjustment. That's not a minor detail. On standard surface closers, a valve that backs all the way out drops hydraulic fluid and destroys the closer. The captured design on the 1431 prevents that.
The backcheck valve is adjustable and standard on every 1431. It absorbs the energy of a door being pushed open hard and prevents the door slamming into the wall or frame. The pressure relief valves on both the opening and closing cycles provide an additional layer of protection for the door and frame.
