About this item
The Sargent 8204 is the storeroom function lock body from the Sargent 8200 Series -widely regarded as the benchmark mortise lock in commercial door hardware. This listing is for the lock body only. That means the outside front plate, strike, and screwpack are included, but the cylinder and trim are not. You source the lever trim, rose, and cylinder separately to match your project's key system and design spec. If you've been searching "sargent 8204" or just "8204" and landed here, that "body only" distinction is the first thing to confirm before you order.
What Storeroom Function Means
Function 04 is storeroom or closet -ANSI F07. The outside trim is always locked. A key in the outside cylinder retracts the latch so someone can enter. Without a key, the outside lever doesn't operate. The inside trim is always free, so anyone inside can exit at any time without a key. That's the function for server rooms, pharmaceutical storage, stockrooms, and any application where you need controlled keyed access from outside with unrestricted egress from inside.
On a full 8200 series lockset, there's also an auxiliary deadlatch -a small plunger next to the main latch that prevents the latch from being pushed back with a credit card or thin tool when the door is closed. It's standard on the 8204 body.
Why the 8200 Body Is Specified So Often
Sargent's 8200 series lock body has been independently tested to 16 million cycles -that's the V584148 UL verification if your project spec requires documented cycle testing. ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requires 1 million cycles. The 8200 exceeds that by fourteen times. On doors with heavy daily traffic, that cycle count is the difference between a lock that lasts the building's lifetime and one that requires service every few years.
The case is 12 gauge wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, 7/64 inch thick. The inside front holding the lock body in the door is 1/8 inch cold-rolled steel. Heavy-duty wrought steel hubs with high-carbon steel spring cartridges drive the hubs rather than lighter-duty components. None of that's visible once the lock is installed, but it's what keeps the lock operating correctly through a decade of daily use on a busy institutional door.
Multi-Function Body and Field Reversibility
The 8200 lock body is multi-function by design. The same body can be reconfigured on-site to a different function if the opening's use changes -you don't pull the lock and replace it, you adjust the body configuration. That's useful in facilities where rooms get repurposed over time, or where a specification changes between bid and installation.
The body is also field reversible for handing. Specify your finish at the time of order; handing is handled in the field during installation.
Cylinder and Trim Compatibility
The 8204 body works with all Sargent key systems: Degree, Signature, KESO, and XC. It also works with standard mortise cylinder formats from other manufacturers when specified correctly. There are 56 available functions in the 8200 body platform, and the 8204 storeroom is one of the most commonly specified.
If you're ordering the "8204v" variant -the V suffix refers to a visual indicator or specific trim option. Contact us to confirm which variant your project specifies.
