The Sargent 8213 is the communication or exit latch function in the Sargent 8200 Series mortise lock platform, ANSI Function F31. No outside trim and no cylinder. Sargent 8213 Communication/Exit Latch: What the Function Means

The 8213 function carries two names because it serves two distinct applications in practice, and understanding the distinction matters for hardware schedules.

As an exit latch, the 8213 is specified on exit-only doors in a facility where the egress path requires a mortise lock body for frame compatibility or fire rating but no outside access is needed or permitted. The inside lever retracts the latchbolt for egress. There is nothing on the exterior face except the front plate. The door cannot be entered from the outside using any mechanism on the lock itself. This function is common on stairwell discharge doors, mechanical room exits, and perimeter exit doors where re-entry is not part of the use case.

As a communication or connecting room lock, the 8213 is specified on interior doors between adjacent rooms or suites where both occupants need to be able to exit through the door freely but no keyed or locked access control is required. The latchbolt keeps the door closed and the inside lever opens it from the room side. A pull handle, push/pull trim, or passage trim is typically added to the outside face as a companion piece to allow pulling the door open from the opposite side, but the lock body itself provides no outside operating mechanism.

8213 vs. 8215: Choosing the Correct Non-Keyed Function

The 8213 and 8215 are both non-keyed functions in the 8200 Series. The 8215 is a passage function: both levers are always active and retract the latchbolt from either side. The 8213 has no outside lever at all, only an inside lever. If the opening requires lever operation from both sides, the 8215 is correct. If the opening requires inside-only lever operation with no outside lever or trim on the lock body itself, the 8213 is correct. Outside trim such as a pull handle or push plate can be added to the door face alongside the 8213 front plate as a separate item.
