Sargent 8217 Asylum or Institutional Mortise Lock

The Sargent 8217 is the asylum and institutional function in the 8200 Series mortise lock line. ANSI function F30. Both the inside and outside levers are locked at all times - neither lever operates the latch without a key. A key from either side retracts the latchbolt. That's the defining constraint of asylum function: there is no free lever on either face. Staff on both sides of the door must use a key every single time.

This is the most restrictive standard mortise function in the Sargent 8200 lineup. It gets specified for psychiatric units, behavioral health facilities, secure detention areas, and any institutional opening where preventing unauthorized exit AND unauthorized entry simultaneously is the clinical or security requirement.

How ANSI F30 Differs From Every Other 8200 Series Function

Most people who land on the 8217 are specifiers comparing it to a handful of similar-sounding functions. The distinction matters.

8237 (F05, classroom): Outside lever is locked, key unlocks temporarily. Inside lever always free. Staff can lock the outside from the corridor but can't trap anyone inside.

8267 (institutional privacy): Inside thumbturn locks outside lever, key from outside always works. For patient rooms where observation capability is maintained.

8217 (F30, asylum/institutional, this product): Both sides locked at all times. Key required from inside AND outside. Neither lever is ever free without key operation. No thumbturn. No toggle. No inside egress without a key.

This makes the 8217 one of the very few mortise functions where inside egress is not freely available without a key. It should only be specified in environments where that level of control is clinically appropriate and legally permitted, and where the door schedule has been reviewed with the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for life safety compliance.

Ligature Resistant and Behavioral Health Variants

The standard 8217 comes with conventional lever and rose trim. For psychiatric and behavioral health environments, Sargent offers the 8217 with ligature-resistant trim options that eliminate ligature points on the lever and escutcheon.

BHL trim: Behavioral health lever design. Rounded, ligature-resistant profile. Can be used in virtually any healthcare opening.

BHW trim: Another behavioral health escutcheon configuration for specific applications.

ALP trim: Push/pull bar trim without a lever or escutcheon profile. Mounts horizontal or vertical for patient room applications.

All ligature-resistant variants maintain the F30 asylum function - both sides locked, key required from both sides. If your specification requires ligature-resistant trim, add the appropriate trim suffix when ordering.

Latchbolt: Stainless steel, 3/4" (19mm) projection, one-piece anti-friction reversible.
