About this item

The Sargent 8225 is the Dormitory or Exit function mortise lock from Sargent's 8200 Series, the Grade 1 commercial mortise lockset line rated for universities, schools, hospitals, office buildings, multi-family residential, and government facilities. It runs on ANSI function F13, which combines deadbolt control by key or thumbturn with latchbolt access that depends entirely on whether the deadbolt is projected or retracted.

 

Sargent 8225 Function: ANSI F13 Dormitory or Exit

 

The 8225 Dormitory or Exit function operates in four distinct states, and understanding all four is critical for specifying the right lock on the right opening.

 

When the deadbolt is retracted, trim from either side retracts the latchbolt freely. Anyone can come and go. When the deadbolt is projected by key from outside or thumbturn from inside, the outside trim locks completely. The outside lever won't move. At that point, the only way to operate the outside trim is by key. The inside lever, however, remains functional: turning it retracts both the latchbolt and the projected deadbolt simultaneously, releasing the door and unlocking the outside trim in one motion.

 

The key distinction between the 8225 and the 8227 (the other common dormitory function) is the thumbturn. The 8225 includes a thumbturn on the inside escutcheon, so the occupant can lock the deadbolt from inside without a key. The 8227 omits the thumbturn; inside occupants can only exit, not lock themselves in. For dormitory rooms, hotel rooms, and private offices where occupants need to lock the door from inside without carrying a key, the 8225 is the correct specification.

 

8200 Series Build: 16 Million Cycle Certification

 

The Sargent 8200 Series holds an independently verified UL cycle test at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148), which is 14 times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement. The lockcase is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, 7/64-inch thick. The inside front is 1/8-inch cold-rolled steel. The latchbolt is one-piece stainless steel with 3/4-inch projection and anti-friction reversible operation. The deadbolt is one-piece hardened stainless steel with 1-inch projection.

 

Hubs are cold-forged steel. The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel, non-handed. Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract the latchbolt, and the lock is easily field reversible without opening the lockcase.
