Sargent 8227 Closet or Storeroom Mortise Lock

The Sargent 8227 is the Closet or Storeroom function mortise lock from the Sargent 8200 Series, the Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise lockset that holds independently verified UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles. The 8227 is the correct specification for dormitory corridors, hotel room entry doors, multi-family residential units, and commercial closet or storage room openings where a deadbolt must be operated by key from outside and trim from inside must always provide free egress.

Sargent 8227 Function: Dormitory or Exit

The 8227 operates on the Dormitory or Exit function. Key from outside retracts and projects the deadbolt. You can open the latchbolt from either side using the trim, and the latchbolt and deadbolt usually work separately. But if the deadbolt is locked, using the inside trim will pull back both bolts at once, unlocking the door in one smooth action.This model doesn’t have a thumbturn like the 8225, which is what sets the 8227 apart.This is the same as the 24 function without a thumbturn, meaning the only way to lock or unlock the outside from the corridor is by key.

This function is specified on dormitory entry doors where a resident needs to lock the door by key when leaving, corridor closet doors where key control is required, and hotel room configurations where all locking from outside must use a keyed cylinder without the security risk of an accessible thumbturn.

Why the 8227 Is Specified Over a Cylindrical Storeroom Lock

The Sargent 8200 mortise lockbody provides both a latchbolt and a deadbolt in a single door prep, eliminating the need for a separate deadlock above the latch. The 8227's 1-inch hardened stainless steel deadbolt and 3/4-inch stainless steel anti-friction latchbolt deliver a two-point locking system from one mortise pocket. The lockcase also provides 9 functions configurable from a single lockbody, which reduces inventory requirements on large multi-family or institutional projects.

The multi-function 8200 lockbody allows the 8227 function to be reconfigured into other functions on-site without disassembling the lockcase, which is a significant advantage during construction phases when function requirements change after hardware has shipped.
