Sargent 8238 Function: Classroom Security Intruder Latchbolt

The ANSI F32 classroom security intruder function is what makes the 8238 the correct specification for active threat and lockdown scenarios. The function operates as follows: a key from either side locks or unlocks the outside trim and also retracts the latchbolt. Outside trim retracts the latchbolt except when locked. Inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely for egress. The critical security feature is that a key from the outside of the door can lock the outside lever without requiring the door to be closed or the teacher to step into the corridor. A key inserted and turned in the outside cylinder from either the secure side or the corridor side locks the outside lever immediately, and the door can be locked from a distance without exposure.

This is the function difference between an 8238 (intruder latchbolt) and an 8237 (classroom function): the 8238 adds the ability to retract the latchbolt with the key in addition to locking the trim.

The 8200 Series exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 by 14 times the required cycle count. The lockbody case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, 7/64-inch thick. The inside front is 1/8-inch cold-rolled steel that holds the lock securely in the door edge. The latchbolt is one-piece stainless steel with a 3/4-inch projection and anti-friction reversible operation. The deadbolt is one-piece hardened stainless steel with a 1-inch projection. Heavy-duty wrought steel hubs and a high carbon steel spring cartridge are what deliver the 16-million cycle verification (ID: V584148), not just a claimed rating.

Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract the latchbolt. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case. The lock is easily re-handed without removing parts or opening the case, which reduces installation time by up to 40% compared to competitive mortise locks.
