The 8266 operates on ANSI Function F19. The inside thumbturn retracts and projects the deadbolt, locking the outside trim when the deadbolt is thrown. The outside lever retracts the latchbolt at all times except when the deadbolt is projected. Operating the inside lever retracts both the latchbolt and the deadbolt simultaneously, which releases the outside lever in a single motion for immediate egress without having to manipulate the thumbturn first. The inside lever is always free.

Emergency access from the exterior works three ways: by coin, by standard screwdriver, or by the Sargent emergency key (part number 14-0057, ordered separately). That emergency release retracts and projects the deadbolt without a standard cylinder key, which is the correct behavior for healthcare and hospitality applications where staff need rapid privacy override capability without managing a keyed cylinder per door.

MicroShield Antimicrobial Option

The Sargent 8266 is available with MicroShield, Sargent's silver-based antimicrobial finish coating. MicroShield permanently suppresses the growth of bacteria, algae, fungus, mold, and mildew on the lock surface. It is EPA registered, NSF approved, and FDA listed. The 8200 Series lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, with a case thickness of 7/64 inch (3mm / 0.109 inch). The internal front is 1/8 inch (0.125 inch) cold-rolled steel. Hubs are cold-forged steel for wear resistance across high cycle counts.
