About this item

 

The Sargent 8272 is the double cylinder, fail safe electromechanical mortise lock from the Sargent 8200 Series, the flagship commercial mortise lock line from ASSA ABLOY's Sargent brand. It's the access-controlled door lock specified on secured perimeter openings where the inside lever also requires a key for operation and where power failure must result in an unlocked, freely operable door.

 

Understanding the 8272 Model Number

 

The last two digits of any Sargent 8200 Series mortise lock identify its function. The 8271 is the most common electromechanical Sargent mortise lock: single cylinder, fail safe, with a key outside and a thumbturn inside. The 8272 changes the inside trim from a thumbturn to a key cylinder. That's what "double cylinder" means in this context. Both the outside and inside of the door require a key to retract the latchbolt mechanically. The electronic fail safe function operates on the outside lever through the access control signal.

 

This configuration is specified on high-security exterior doors, secured facility perimeters, and any opening where inside access also needs to be key-controlled, not freely operable from the inside with a thumbturn.

 

Fail Safe vs Fail Secure: Which One and Why

 

The fail safe designation means that when power is removed from the lock, whether through a fire alarm signal, a building emergency, or a power outage, the electric locking mechanism releases and the outside lever operates freely. The door can be opened and closed without restriction. This is the correct specification for doors on egress paths, fire-rated corridors, and openings where life safety codes require free egress during emergencies. A fail secure lock does the opposite: it stays locked when power is removed. That's the 8271 configuration for access-controlled interior doors where security must be maintained even during outages.

 

EcoFlex Technology

 

The Sargent 8272 uses EcoFlex motorized latch retraction technology. Earlier Sargent electromechanical mortise locks used solenoids, which draw higher continuous current, generate heat, and put more demand on the power supply circuit. EcoFlex replaces the solenoid with a precision DC motor that drives a locking piece assembly in and out of the latch retraction hub. The motor only activates during state changes, not continuously. This cuts power consumption by up to 96% versus older solenoid designs. The latch retracts in half a second with applied power. No heating is detectable during extended latch holdback states. A single power supply can support significantly more EcoFlex locks on the same circuit than older solenoid-based designs, which reduces infrastructure cost on large access control projects.

 

Voltage, Wiring, and Integration

 

The 8272 operates on 12 or 24VDC regulated power and auto-detects the voltage, which simplifies power supply specification and allows the same lock to work on either voltage standard. Electrolynx connectors are included for clean, reliable wiring connections. The lock is compatible with any standard access control system. Optional prefixes include RX (Request to Exit switch), LX (latch monitor switch), and DX (door position switch), which can be combined for monitoring and integration: RX-LX-8272 for a door that monitors both exit requests and latch state simultaneously.

 

Physical Specifications and Certifications

 

The 8272 uses the same 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel lockcase as the full 8200 Series, zinc dichromate plated. Door thickness is 1-3/4" standard. Minimum stile width for electrical function is 4-3/4". Standard cylinder is brass, size #41 (1-1/8"), in the LA keyway. The 8272 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Grade 1 operational and security standards, UL listed for 3-hour fire doors on single doors 4'x10' and double doors 8'x10'. All trim designs are through-bolted. Field reversible for handing. Multiple lever, rose, and escutcheon styles are available. Finishes include US3, US4, US10, US10B, US26D, US32D, and others.

 

The 8200 Series carries a 10-year limited warranty on the mechanical components and a 2-year limited warranty on the electrified components.
