About this item
The Accentra 353 is the single cylinder outside, blank plate inside mortise deadbolt from Yale's 350 Series. If you searched "yale single cylinder deadlock" - this is the product. Accentra is the current brand name for Yale commercial hardware under ASSA ABLOY. The 353 model number, specifications, and 350 Series function matrix carry forward directly from the Yale catalog. Same deadlock, same construction, same UL fire listings - new label.
What Makes the 353 Different from Other Single Cylinder Deadbolts
Most single cylinder deadbolts have a key outside and a thumbturn inside. The 353 does not. The inside plate is blank - no thumbturn, no inside trim of any kind. The deadbolt operates by key from outside only. There is no way to extend or retract the bolt from inside the door without a key.
This is a deliberate function selection for specific applications where inside control is not appropriate or required. Storerooms, equipment rooms, utility closets, server rooms, supply storage areas, and any space where only authorized personnel with a key should have access - including preventing someone inside from locking the room from within - are all correct applications for the 353. When inside operation is required, the 352 (cylinder outside, thumbturn inside) is the correct 350 Series model.
The 350 Series Function Matrix: Choosing the Right Model
The Accentra 350 Series mortise deadlocks cover five distinct functions across the product line. All use the same case and backset - only the inside and outside trim configuration changes:
351 - Double cylinder: key outside and key inside, no thumbturn either side. The bolt operates by key from both sides only.
352 - Single cylinder outside, thumbturn inside: key outside, thumbturn inside. Standard residential and commercial deadbolt function with full inside control.
353 - Single cylinder outside, blank plate inside: key outside only, no inside operation. This listing.
354 - Exit, thumbturn inside only: thumbturn operates the bolt from inside, no outside cylinder. The bolt cannot be operated from outside at all.
356 - Double cylinder with thumbturn inside: key outside, and the inside has both a key cylinder and a thumbturn.
357 - Single cylinder classroom: key outside, but the inside thumbturn can only retract the bolt - it cannot project it. Used where the outside key controls locking but inside egress is always possible.
Confirm which function your opening requires before ordering. The case, backset, bolt, and UL fire listing are identical across all 350 Series models.
Laminated Stacked Steel Bolt and Anti-Saw Pin
The deadbolt on the 353 is a 1-inch laminated stacked steel bolt with a hardened pin insert. Laminated construction means the bolt body is built from multiple layers of steel bonded together rather than a single solid piece. This adds lateral strength - the bolt resists cutting attacks that would work on a single-piece bolt of the same dimension. The hardened pin is the anti-saw feature: when a saw blade contacts the spinning pin during a cutting attack, the pin rotates with the blade rather than being progressively cut through, making the bolt resistant to saw attack even when the laminated layers are being worked.
Case Construction and Door Prep
The case is heavy wrought steel, zinc plated and dichromated for corrosion protection. The front plate is 4-5/8 inches by 1-1/8 inches in brass, bronze, or stainless steel - selectable by finish at order. The faceplate adjusts to accommodate flat or beveled door edges, with a bevel adjustment of 1/8 inch in 2 inches. Backset is 2-3/4 inches only - no alternative backset is available in the 350 Series.
Door preparation conforms to ANSI/BHMA A156.115 for steel doors and frames and A156.115-W for wood doors. The standard strike is the 30S flat strike at 3-1/2 inches by 1-1/8 inches. The ANSI/BHMA A156.115 lip strike, model 545N at 4-7/8 inches by 1-1/4 inches, is available as an option for wood door frame applications.
Included Cylinder: 2153 with 2160 Cam
The 353 ships with the Accentra 2153 mortise cylinder - a 1-1/8-inch, 6-pin fixed core conventional cylinder with the Yale/Sargent 2160 cam. This is the same cylinder used across Yale mortise locksets and is a direct retail stock item at American Locksets if the cylinder ever needs replacement. Keyways available at order: PARA (ER1), GA, GB, GC. Keying options: KD (keyed different, standard), KA (keyed alike, +$20), MK (master keyed, +$30).
UL Fire Listings
The 350 Series deadlocks, when used in conjunction with the primary latching device, are UL/cUL listed for use on fire doors up to and including a 3-hour rating. In addition, cUL lists the 350 Series for use on wood doors rated up to and including 90 minutes. These listings apply when the 353 is used as the supplemental deadlock alongside a primary latchset on a fire-rated door assembly.
