About this item
The Schlage L460 is a cylinder-by-thumbturn small case mortise deadbolt from the Schlage L400 Series, certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1 and UL-cUL listed for 3-hour fire doors under UL10C and CAN/ULC-S104. It is designed for commercial and institutional applications where a deadbolt is required without a latch, including restrooms, utility rooms, storage areas, and auxiliary security openings where an independent keyed deadbolt supplements a primary mortise latch lock on the same door. American Locksets is an authorized Allegion Schlage dealer stocking the L460 with same-day shipping and free shipping on all orders over $300.
Schlage L460 Deadbolt: Function ANSI E06071
The L460 operates on ANSI Function E06071: the deadbolt is thrown or retracted by key from the outside and by thumbturn from the inside. There is no lever or knob on either side. The outside trim provides only the keyed cylinder for deadbolt operation. The inside trim provides only the thumbturn. The deadbolt is the sole operating mechanism.
This is the Schlage commercial thumbturn deadbolt that corresponds to what many specifiers call a "single-cylinder deadbolt with thumbturn inside" in a mortise lock body. It differs from the L462 (double cylinder, keyed both sides) and the L463 (classroom function where the thumbturn retracts but cannot project the deadbolt).
The L400 small case is not available with escutcheon trim. The cylinder and thumbturn mount directly to the case.

Schlage Commercial Thumbturn Deadbolt: Where It Gets Specified
The L460 occupies a specific place on a hardware schedule that many architects get wrong initially. It is not a standalone entry lock and it is not a replacement for a mortise lock with lever trim. It is a supplemental deadbolt that installs in a dedicated deadbolt prep in the door edge, separate from the primary mortise lock cutout. On a restroom door where the primary lock is a passage or privacy function, the L460 provides an auxiliary deadbolt that the user or staff can engage independently for added security without interfering with the primary latching hardware.
On institutional and healthcare applications where a second level of physical security is required at a specific opening, the L460 is the correct specification. It also serves as the lock for small utility doors, mechanical rooms, and access hatches where no latching hardware is needed but the opening requires keyed deadbolt security with interior thumbturn egress.
