Yale 356G Mortise Deadbolt: Function and How It Operates

The 356 function means the deadbolt is operated by key on the exterior and by thumbturn on the interior. The inside thumbturn retracts the deadbolt for egress but does not project it. To project the deadbolt from the inside, a key is required. This is the critical functional difference from a standard thumbturn-only deadbolt and is important on commercial openings where the deadbolt should not be left projected from the inside without keyed authority.

Yale 356G vs. Other Yale 350 Series Deadbolts: Which Function Is Right

The Yale 351 is a pure double cylinder lock: keyed exterior and keyed interior only, no thumbturn at all. The 352 is the most common configuration: keyed exterior and thumbturn-only interior, allowing thumbturn projection and retraction from inside. The 354 is thumbturn-only on both sides for exit-only applications. The 356 is the keyed exterior plus thumbturn interior configuration where the thumbturn retracts but does not project the deadbolt.

The 356 is the correct specification when the hardware schedule requires keyed authority to project the deadbolt from the inside, while still allowing a quick thumbturn retraction for egress. This is common on exit access doors in secured institutional environments, on doors between secure and non-secure zones, and on hotel corridor doors where the inside deadbolt should not be projected without a key.
