About this item
The Accentra Yale 357 is the 350 Series mortise deadbolt you specify when you need key control from outside and thumbturn access from inside, but with a specific twist that sets it apart from the standard 352 model. The 357 uses a classroom function mortise lockbody. That means the inside thumbturn can retract the deadbolt to allow exit, but it can't project it. Only the outside key cylinder throws the bolt. This is the right choice for classrooms, offices, and institutional doors where an occupant needs to be able to leave quickly but shouldn't be able to lock themselves in or deadbolt the room from inside without proper authorization.
If that function doesn't match your application and you need a standard thumbturn that both retracts and projects the bolt from inside, the 352 is the model you want instead.
How the Lock Works
From outside, a key operates the deadbolt in both directions, throwing and retracting it. From inside, the thumbturn retracts the bolt for exit but won't project it. The lockbody (part number 50-0357-0001-999) is a classroom function design specifically built to prevent inside locking. It's a subtle but important operational distinction that matters enormously in schools, government buildings, and secured office environments.
Construction Details
The deadbolt itself is laminated stacked steel with a hardened steel pin and a full 1" throw. That's not a spring latch, that's a genuine deadbolt that requires the key or thumbturn to move in either direction. The front plate is 4-5/8" x 1-1/8", available in brass, bronze, or stainless steel, and it's adjustable to accommodate both flat and beveled door edges. Bevel adjustment runs up to 1/8" in 2" of door edge. The case is heavy wrought steel, zinc plated and dichromated for corrosion resistance.
Standard strike is model 30S, 3-1/2" x 1-1/8". If your door schedule calls for the longer ANSI strike, the 545N at 4-7/8" x 1-1/4" is available as an option. A wrought box (model 31S) is also available for projects that need it.
Backset and Door Specs
The backset is 2-3/4" (70mm) only. That's fixed for this series, so confirm your door prep before ordering. Door thickness for installation is 1-3/4" (44mm) standard. Maximum door thickness for thumbturn function is 3". The 350 series conforms to ANSI/BHMA A156.115 door prep specifications for both steel doors with steel frames and wood doors with wood or steel frames.
Fire Rating
When used together with a primary latching device, the Yale 357 mortise deadbolt is UL and cUL listed for fire doors rated up to 3 hours. It's also cUL listed for wood doors rated up to 90 minutes. This is a paired listing, meaning the deadbolt works alongside the primary latch on the door, not as a standalone fire rated device.
Handing and Field Reversibility
The 357 is non-handed and easily field reversible. No special ordering for left-hand or right-hand doors. The same unit installs on either handing without sending it back or ordering a handed version, which saves time and headaches on mixed door schedules.
This is still sold and referenced widely as the Yale 357 or Yale mortise deadbolt, and it's also searched as Yale Accentra and Yale deadlock. The brand is now Accentra, formerly Yale, but the part numbers, specifications, and hardware prep remain unchanged.
